You Know Things Have Changed When There a Dusty Fisker\'s Karma Parked Next You
|   Thursday, October 18, 2012
You really do know you're living in an upscale community when you see a $100,000-plus parked next to your rather ordinary 07 Chevy Malibu. You really have to keep from drooling and wrecking the Fisker's finish.

We found that out during a shopping trip yesterday – it was an emergency trip – to the local supermarket and right there, big as life and twice as muscular-looking is the world's first 200-mph-plus all-electric Fisker's Karma parked there among the Pilots and the CR-Vs and Chevy Malibus.

It really comes as a shock when all of the gabbing at local town meetings about who's buying what when, come true.

It's quite a car, too. With it's almost next to the road roll-center, the Fisker's can take any curve or corner that may be thrown in its way with little more than a tail wiggle. But, now, when we had the chance to do so, we jumped behind the wheel of this rather brave neighbor of ours (maybe the corned beef with Dijon mustard helped) and started here up.

Just like that there's nothing – no engine read to rev to 12,000 rpm, how V-12 howling through dual direct short exhaust ports provided b the manufacturer. Instead, even with the fob on the dash and with the "go" button pushed, you don't hear anything.

The next 20 minutes have got to be the best 20 minutes I had in the last few weeks.

The lines are positively voluptuous and when you study them from any angle your see that things were carefully design to work together. That's why they tiny roofline of the cabin literally merges – as if there's nothing at all in the way and when we checked there wasn't – with the front fenders and quarters that are also as nicely styled at the low-cross-section front end. The narrow front end which literally swoops up to the roof through the windshield contributes to a 200-plus mpg rating and a two-door that will do over a deuce easily (not wise unless you can handle a high-dollar ticket and extra charges for the next six years but we're guessing that someone who drives a Fisker's Karma really doesn't car about that.

He did watch with more than a little trouble in his face as we ran the quarter in just under 8 seconds for an exit speed of about 115 mpg and a 0 to 60 run in the low 3s. Only Lambos and Audi R8s are supposed to have that kind of power.

Topping off a handling package that has absolutely not roll or lean and keeps all wheels settled safely on the ground no matter just how hard you play with things to get to break free. They do, eventually, of course, but with just a little application of the accelerator to this rear-drive v vehicle and you bring things back into full compliance again.

The seats are about as comfortable and supportive as we've ever driven and the instrument display is right there where you need it. The six-speed (at least it's not a CVT where you have two outcomes, the acceleration is more leisurely than it has to be and the six speeds are nicely matched to the near 150 KW electric wheel motors (each one has its own electric and then there's the rack of lithium/polymers which are about the energy densest batteries available) all mean that your experience behind the wheel with the six-speed is just to good for words.

We could go on and on about this Fisker's Karma and we'd like to thank the gent who let us put it through its paces, but, really the only way you're going to find if what we're saying is true or just hype is up to you and your dealer. Good luck!!!
