Xtrac to inspire Speed for Cars by Transmissions
|   Sunday, May 12, 2013
The British engineering firm named Xtrac has been contributing to the field of the motorsport greatly. Based in Berkshire, the company is well known for its designing and building of the transmissions for loads of cars, which are used in the likes of Formula 1, Dakar Rally, Le Mans and so on.

While motorsport being the major field of business for Xtrac, it has now moved for the road cars as well. In other words, the company has expanded its working attributes while going beyond motorsport, which has been their specialized field for almost about 3 decades.

At present, the company is concentrating on the fields of automotive and engineering. Their primary preferences are on military marine, aerospace and road cars. One of their most well known projects in the recent times has been the installation of the speed automated gearbox on the Pagani Huayra supercar. This was totally out of the expertise of the motorcars by Xtrac.

The company believes in the philosophy of ‘race to road' nowadays. The general manager for automotive and engineering, Clive Woolmer has pointed out that the phrase has come from the high profile project of Pagani Huayra of Zonda R.

The transverse cluster race gearbox was turned to the same gearbox with the road car automated manual speed controls. This was lighter than the gearbox having double clutches. Starting right from there, Xtrac has commenced its journey to move forward in the markets. The expertise, which they are working on the road cars to acquire, is not an experiment, but more of the continuation of the process.

Xtrac started its flourishing from 1984, when Mike Endean set up his business after leaving transmission company Hewland. Endean was specialized in making transmission systems for four-wheelers, which attracted the teams of Word Rally Championship and F1 squads.

Contracts and projects were coming through, which helped Xtrac grow wider. It was in 1997, when the management and workforce team, led by Peter Digby, current company president, shifted its base of operation in Thatcham. It is the present operation base for the company, measuring about 88,000-square-foot.

The likes of Indycars, Marussia F1 and other F1 squads are served by the gearboxes and components of Xtrac. Among other notable inclusions, Brazilian stock cars and motocross bikes, along with the new project of Le Mans 24 Hours can be named. Under the eyes of Adrian Moore, the technical director and Woolmer, the years 2011 and 2012 have seen exclusive growth of their business.

Xtrac is specialized in processing out the activities of researching, designing and creating under the same roof. Also, the close relationship with Tata Steel and the production of the transmission systems for the industrial jobs give them the edge.

Despite having potentials to go for the supplies to the branded manufacturers, the company is keeping things simple and grabbing the sports car luxury sector. Woolmer states that Xtrac's main goal is to expand in the concerned field by technology and innovation, and no further than that.
