World Premiere: Apple Watch Controls BMW Functions
|   Wednesday, May 20, 2015
The BMW i Remote app can already be used for verification and controlling functions on the BMW i models. Customers can use the application from day one on the new Apple Watch, whose launch is eagerly awaited by hordes of fans.

The Apple Watch uses the BMW i Remote app - which can be downloaded free from the Apple iTunes Store – to inform drivers on the current status of the car battery, or to receive a notification when the high-voltage battery is fully charged.
Additionally, Apple Watch may continue with navigation instructions from BMW i3 at the final destination of the user, after the car was parked, or may direct the driver to where the car is parked. It also allows presetting the temperature for air conditioning.

The Apple Watch can be used as a traditional clock too, and is a clever extension to a connected Apple iPhone. It can interconnect the driver with the BMW i3 or the BMW i8 at any time - remotely if desired - and allows users to check or control important functions directly through the BMW i Remote app, without having to remove the smartphone from one's pocket, unlocking the screen and entering a code.

The Apple Watch is controlled through the push motions, or oscillation, of the touch-sensitive surface that has become second nature thanks to smartphones and tablets. An up oscillation of the summary screen reveals the home screen of the BMW i Remote app - the application's central navigating point for the Apple Watch variant.

The home screen shows the car connected to the Smart Watch. Also, battery charging status, the available range and the time are displayed,. The continuation of the home screen reveals a new menu where users can check a range of information about the car, like if the doors are locked, the hatch is still open, or the trunk closed. Also offered are service alerts - for example, if you have made a change or if the brake fluid needs inspection. This list can be hidden by an oscillating movement on the screen or by turning the Digital Crown, the central instrument of control on the Apple Watch.

One of many innovations present on the BMW i3, the first electric car launched in the premium segment, is the intermodal route planning. This function may propose routes using means of public transport, thus avoiding traffic jams in city centers, restricted areas for cars or providing a solution for situations with low range. This type of navigation function is unique among auto manufacturers, and offers a first integration for the Apple Watch. The system automatically creates an itinerary by public transport and the Apple Watch owners can easily view it directly on the watch list. Together these features significantly improve mobility, particularly in urban areas.

Through the integrated SIM cards, the BMW i3 and BMW i8 are optimized for connectivity, while the BMW i Remote app creates a close connection between car, driver and the outside world. The BMW i Remote app for Apple Watch joins the mass of solutions for mobile devices available for the Android operating system, which shows the rapid reaction of BMW - with smart solutions such as solid services and the applications from BMW ConnectedDrive portfolio - to respond to the rapid pace of innovation as far as smart cars go.
