Why The Opel Adam Is Less A Fiat 500 And More Than A Ford Ka
|   Saturday, January 12, 2013
Opel has recently reaffirmed the desire for the Adam mini to be perceived as a premium small class car with a similar target as the Fiat 500. The high degree of customization and qualitative information could be arguments on which the German manufacturer is counting in order to attract attention to this model. Prices are similar to the Fiat 500 in an obvious attempt to "break" its market share. No less important to the new Adam and other competitors are the Mini class leader, the machine that generated the phenomenon of "premium retro", Audi A1, Smart, Citroen DS3, the new VW Up and the much less publicized Ford Ka, a clone of the Fiat 500.

Theoretically, Opel has taken all the attributes that these cars have: nice design, a good level of equipment, a length under 4 meters, finishing quality, highly customizable, and last but not least, potential sport versions to polish the image model.

From a technical standpoint, the Adam is built on the Corsa's short platform, assuming the model's suitable engines: 1.2 and 1.4 liter petrol engines with enough economics and which were also tested. The 3 cylinder 1 liter unit will follow. The solution is very good and provides a perfect starting point for Adam.

In terms of price, Opel announced a grid identical to that of the Fiat 500, which is not necessarily an advantage, but prices are expected to launch lower. The production costs: there could be a handicap because Opel chose to produce the model in Germany in the same factory with the Corsa.

"The way the car was built enables us to manufacture in Germany and be profitable," said Opel's marketing chief, Alfred Rieck, for Automotive News.
But where is the car manufactured is not a problem (it is more like an advantage for Adam). In comparison with the Fiat 500, the target chosen by the Adam Opel, we can easily see that the model missed the start and the Germans have no effective strategy. For this reason, its future is far from being compared with that of the Fiat 500, not to mention the Mini, and even about VW Up.

In terms of sales, Opel bosses announced a plan for 40.000 to 50.000 units per year, the main target being young customers. Adam's commercial launch is underway in Europe, Germany has already started and the first cars were sold in 2012, but according to statistics, only 300 Adams were delivered by Opel in November and December. And if we look at the most important competition on the continent, "Car of the Year" the Opel Adam did not qualify for the finals.

Therefore, we can say that the Opel Adam resembles the Ford Ka, more than the Fiat 500. Ford launched the car a year after Fiat's 500 and it is almost identical to that at the technical level. It is built in the same factory in Poland, with comparable prices, but its existence was discreet, with medium sales, without much exuberance. Not long ago, a representative announced that the Ford Ka will be taken out of production at the end of its life, for reasons of profitability. Last year, Ford sold 74.000 units Ka in Europe, but the rate has fallen below 4.000 copies per month in 2012.
