VW T-Prime Concept GTE Signals Germans' Desire For Large Size SUVs
|   Saturday, May 14, 2016
Volkswagen introduced at the Auto Show in Beijing the T-Prime GTE concept which paves the way for a large size SUV full of technology. In 2014 Volkswagen unveiled the T-Roc concept which was later transformed into a similar size crossover of the Golf model.

At the Geneva Motor Show Volkswagen revealed the T-Cross Breeze, designed to give rise to a similar size crossover off the Volkswagen Polo variant. Well now, at the auto show in Beijing, the Germans come back with some premieres, showing the T-Prime GTE Concept which is meant to act as a precursor for a large size SUV.

All these new additions to the range of the German group's SUVs lineup will join the new Tiguan with seven seats, the CrossBlue model, and the new Touareg generation. The highlight in terms of SUV supply from the Volkswagen is previewed by this concept car, the T-Prime GTE being described as "one of the most advanced cars in the world".

With a length of 5.06 meters, the T-Prime GTE concept sits 1 cm lower than the now deceased Phaeton. Being a plug-in hybrid vehicle is not surprising that it hosts in the front bumper a pair of LED daytime lights, in the shape of the letter C. The light-emitting diodes are also used for both the headlights and for the rear lights.
They give the SUV a high-tech look that continues as expected on the inside too. The car's dimensions are 192 cm wide and 170 cm high, and the cabin with four seats and individual rear seats offers plenty of space for all passengers.

Inside the new T-Prime GTE is a real technological tour de force, and this is due primarily to a group of 12-inch digital tools and a massive screen, a 15-inch touchscreen, used for the infotainement system.

In addition, the steering wheel has no conventional buttons, being replaced with touch sensitive controls. Besides the two large screens, the car has a display area of 9.6 inches, which is mounted in the back, between the two seats. It is integrated in the center console, and offers rear passengers the ability to adjust seats and climate, also using touch-sensitive buttons.

The engine is a four cylinder turbo engine with a displacement of 2.0 liters, which delivers 248 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque. The internal combustion engine works together with an electric motor of 134 hp integrated into an automatic gearbox with eight speeds. So, the car offers a total of 382 horsepower, being driven by a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

Ultimately the Germans say that the car will go from 0 to 100 km / h in 6 seconds before reaching a top speed of 223 km / hour. The press release says that the concept car has a fuel consumption of just 3.2 l / 100 km in a combined cycle, while in electric mode the 14.1 kWh battery will have a range of 50 kilometers. Once the battery is depleted the full recharging will be done in eight hours at 3.6 kW power outlets, and only two and a half hours at 7.2 kW ones.
