Volvo's Big Plans for the Next Few Years
|   Saturday, January 04, 2014
Plan on the Volvo North America CEO, Tony Nicolosi, recently accepted that the company had started away from its original motto over the years. This is never an easy thing for an executive to accept publicly. Volvo represents nature, environment friendliness, safety and family while customers are looking for all these qualities in a vehicle. This year sales have been down by 6 percent, since 2011 and this is mainly due to the death of the C30 and C70.

Incidentally, Volvo has not launched a single product in the US, post 2010. This has led to a steady decrease in sales while new models are not on the cards. Dormant market conditions have not helped too. Geely however has just pumped $11 Billion into the company and that should give it a fresh boost to pump up sales volume soon.

Geely plans on taking Volvo back to the top of its class within the next decade and Volvo promises to be a premium brand by 2020, with sales target nearing 800,000. Looming emission norms are the only hurdle Volvo needs to overcome now as NCAP tests are expected to get sterner. Volvo needs to work on its current lineup of engines, which varies between four and six cylinders.

Turbo charged engines are currently Volvo's favorite while most of its current vehicles feature an eight speed transmission system. ECU management is important as correct remapping could lead to an increase in 25 percent of sales. Volvo plans to team up with Denso for ECU mapping in future. Volvo also plans on offering performance spec models for high end consumers. These vehicles will feature a maximum of 300 BHP with a maximum T6 trim level.

400 BHP models will be available, but only in hybrids. Various safety measures are currently under scanning; while work is on to enhance a few more. We have not been able to take a sneak peak of things currently under development although new products should be launched quite soon. Volvo recently unveiled plans of launching two new models every year and they should start delivering on their promises by 2014.

Electric and hybrid vehicles are the thing of the future and people who still look forward to big block V8s, will soon have to switch loyalty to other major power houses. Tesla for example does not have any big blocks whatsoever. Their sales figures are quite high nonetheless, while people are satisfied with what they have on offer. Design wise, Volvo has come up with quite a few renderings, even though they have not finalized a singular design yet.

Subtle modifications should be made to their interior, including better finish and refinement. Simplistic yet futuristic design elements are at play here and we could be looking at standard trim levels within the budget here. Volvo has always worn its cultural heritage on its sleeve and this will be expected on next generation models too. Geely is making sure Volvo's culture is preserved, while lending a few personal touches of its own.
