Volvo XC Concept: The Prototype From Which The New XC90 Is Born
|   Wednesday, December 18, 2013
After waiting a while, and not just Volvo fans, but the whole industry in general, the new XC90 – the supreme SUV of the Scandinavian brand - will be officially launched on the market during 2014. The new Volvo XC90 is a Volvo model so important that analysts classify it among the top 10 cars that will see the light of day next year, considering it the most important bet the Swedish brand made with the market since it came out from Ford's tutelage.

But the new XC90 will not arise from nowhere. With design lines already foreshadowed by Coupe Concept, the prototype presented in autumn 2013 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the new XC90 will have a preliminary design study that it will announce.

"The Volvo Concept Coupe is no futuristic dream car," said Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo's new senior vice president of design. "It is designed to demonstrate the capability of our new architecture: the confident stance, the proportions and the most prominent design signatures. Even though the all-new XC90 is an entirely different type of car, you will recognize the connection instantly when it is revealed next year."

The interior of the future XC90 will not escape significant changes. They shall be aimed at evident developments chosen by designers and engineers to carry forward the basic features of the brand. The "floating" center console owned by current Volvo models will be replaced by one in which the buttons disappear, being replaced by a large touch screen.

Besides the obvious modernization in the aesthetic level, the new XC90 raises the stakes with functional and unique technological solutions in the industry. The Volvo SUV will come with self-direction, which allows for the driver to hand control the car in a crowded highway or at traffic lights, by automatically guiding it using an army of sensors and cameras that "read" all around them.

The novelties go into the engines chapter too. The XC90 will benefit from the contribution of the new generation of engines produced in-house by the Swedish brand. The first engines developed 100 percent independent by the Volvo after the Swedish brand it was bought by the Chinese from Geely are units displacing 2.0 liter on petrol and diesel that can develop between 120 and 300 horsepower, the most advanced versions being both supercharged.

The concept car will come with a new approach to Volvo Cars' human-centric user experience. A large portrait touch-screen is placed on centre console, the driver interacting via an adaptive digital display and head-up display in front.

"This is a natural integration of user interfaces in our new car generation. Interaction with pleasure but without distraction is the key. We bring connectivity into our cars to make them both more enjoyable and safe," says Thomas Ingenlath.

The Scalable Product Architecture is also being prepped for fully autonomous driving.

The first cars with autonomous steering to avoid accidents as well as make driving more comfortable will be seen in 2014. The ultimate goal is to have fully autonomous technology on cars on the roads by 2020.
