Volvo Upgrades the V70 D5 SE Lux Geartronic for 2014
|   Thursday, December 26, 2013
Volvo has fine tuned the V70 D5 SE Lux Geartronic which will be entering its seventh year of production soon. Volvo remains as reliable as ever although we are not sure if this vehicle has the best specifications in range. Minor exterior modifications are part of this vehicle and they make the estate appear wider and shorter than before. Light chrome body work is present on this vehicle while technological improvements have been made such as an additional TFT screen mounted on its dash board.

Safety measures have been enhanced while he D5 draws power from a 2.4 liter five cylindered turbo diesel engine. Its drive train is mated to a six speed automated transmission system while Volvo claims an estimated fuel efficiency of 45.6 MPG along with CO2 emissions of 164 g/km. BMW's 525d Touring, which happens to be in direct competition to this vehicle, returns 55.4 MPG and 134 g/km of CO2.

If figures are to be calculated, BMW has better prospects than Volvo in this range. Volvo however takes a big chunk of the pie owing to its lesser powered, manual variant of the V70 which returns better prospects than its automated cousin. The V70 automatic accelerates from 0 – 60 MPH within 7.5 seconds while the engine smoothens out post 2500 RPM.

However, a humming sound is present in the engine which irritates passengers inside the cabin. Refinement levels are not optimum although satisfactory while this vehicle provides sufficient space for front and rear seat passengers. At standard speeds, this vehicle handles, accelerates and steers effectively while outside noise and vibration levels are low. Volvo provides an excellent way to travel in comfort even though an estate may not be an ultimate style statement.

This vehicle is however a little difficult to maneuver within city limits owing to its considerably large body frame. Even though sufficient boot space (573 liters) is provided as standard, its total capacity increases to 1600 liters on removal of rear seats. Skoda's Superb and Mercedes Benz's E Class offers 600 liters as standard even though Volvo's straight door entry is beneficial for easy loading and unloading.

Volvo has introduced a range of safety measures on its V70 and this vehicle informs the driver of imminent threats and dangers in various ways. Blind spot indicator, audible lane departure warning and an automated braking system keeps accidents at bay while another sensor senses nearby pedestrian and cyclists to avoid accidents. This vehicle provides a decent bet at its price point, only if you are willing to buy what Volvo plans to sell.

Priced at £37,455, the Volvo V70 D5 SE Lux Geartronic is well packed although it is not cheap. Its engine and trim level are at an optimum level although people looking for a plush vehicle should fancy owning this estate. A Volvo does not have the easy driving appeal of a BMW or Mercedes Benz for that matter. Hence, its offbeat charms are not meant for one and all to appreciate unconditionally.
