Volvo reveals the new engine range
|   Saturday, August 17, 2013
The details of the Drive-E powertrains, which will reinstate the entire gearboxes and engines, has been made public by Volvo. The latest Volvo engines are divided into two categories: one direct injection petrol and one common rail diesel and in order to achieve great performance and perform with superior power, a mix of turbocharging and supercharging has been used. All the details regarding the 2.0 litrer four cylinder Volvo engine range has just been confirmed and the potential buyers would be more then happy to learn about the new characteristics.

Volvo has declared that each previous engine has been replaced by a newer version which is 10 to 30 per cent more capable and tough. It was also disclosed that the engine specs will be extended from 118bhp to 227bhp and the actual petrol versions will be upgraded to 300bhp from 138bhp.
The ongoing six speed Geartronic gearbox will be replaced by either un upgraded version of six speed manual or by an eight speed automatic.

Apparently, the engines which will firstly receive the latest upgrades are XC60, V60 and S60. They will surely be equipped with the latest supercharged and tubocharged 302bhp petrol T6 which is the substitute for the turbocharged in-line six. Another availability will be the new T5 petrol which was expanded to 242 bhp instead of 237 bhp 2.0 liter four cylinder while the 161 bhp 2.0 liter five cylinder will be taken over by 179bhp D4 turbodiesel. The models V70, XC70 and S80 will feature the new and improved D4 and T5 engines.

Derek Crabb, the Volvo Vice President of Powertrain Engineering acknowledged that new but smaller and more intelligent engines were created and that they will surely be perceived as a lot more powerful and convenient offering fuel economy through the four cylinders' design.

The company has also announced that the i-Art technology used for diesel engines is a world debut. The one fuel injection sensor was replaced by very own CPU for every single cylinder so that the fuel injection would be more strictly monitored, making sure that not a bit of it is lost. Also, the fuel pressure was boosted to 2500bar.
The plug in hybrid was also taken into consideration when designing the Drive E engines, they will also be associated to the modular hybrid system used in the V60.

Always reliable and faithful to the customers, Volvo has publically announced that all of the engines will be created at the Skoyde plant in Sweden in such a way that the production reaches 2000 units per week. The company has also stated that the size of the engine is not so important comparing to the amount of air that gets through it, therefore, smaller engines which get a lot more air have been developed and will be used for the upcoming vehicle series. Customers can buy a Volvo featuring this new engine technology this autumn, probably the first models to incorporate the latest engines would be Volvo S60, Volvo XC60 and Volvo V60.
