Volvo Plans to Launch Next Generation XC90 SUV by 2015
|   Thursday, April 17, 2014
Volvo has confirmed launching its next generation XC90 SUV within a year. The vehicle has just entered its final stages of production, while insiders believe they will be able to come up with a production variant, within one year at most. The SUV is currently under winter testing in Sweden, while summer testing is soon to commence. Undisguised vehicles were showcased to a selected group of photo journalists, at Volvo's Arctic Test Facility.

This seven seated SUV is part of their new fleet of automobiles that the firm hopes to add to their official lineup soon.
Boot space has been increased, along with sufficient leg and head room for its second and third row passengers. Additional interior space however adds considerable amount of weight, although we are not quite sure of its effect on handling right now.

The XC90 however, is based on its predecessor, which is 100 mm longer than its predecessor. Base dimensions are larger, while its entire control layout has been reworked. A 9.5 inch touch screen device has been added to its central console and this controls functionalities such as start / stop, engine kill etc. The entertainment system has also been reworked, while a few other switches are also expected.

Volvo is using a fully operational TFT screen on all its variants and this should provide high resolution images for users. A range of active and passive safety measures are expected on its top end variant and this is part of Volvo's Vision 2020 plan. Volvo is known to master in engineering fields and they plan on effectively stopping accidents, while a vehicle is in motion, by 2020.

This system consists of a whole lot of additional features that will be discussed in the future. Volvo has designed this vehicle on a new Scalable Platform Architecture that will form the basics of their 40, 60 and 90 series models. According to insiders, this new platform is flexible enough to be used on a wide variety of vehicle, ranging from SUVs to sedans. Major changes have been brought to its basic architecture, which in turn enhances the way this vehicle feels.

Volvo is also planning to launch an electric and hybrid variant of this vehicle. Volvo plans on launching similar vehicles in class, each with a unique power train, consisting of super charged or turbo charged engine options. A 300 BHP displacing petrol unit will be the most powerful in range, followed by their hybrid and electric powered vehicle. Every option is expected to be rear wheel driven, although all wheel drive variants could be available in future.

The SPA is a very essential platform for Volvo at this moment and it has been designed along with Chinese car makers Geely Automobiles. This is quite a big project at this moment, as engineers plan to leave no stone unturned, in order to get this vehicle ready for production. Winter tests are to be followed closely by summer tests, while plans to test this vehicle in humid conditions, are also being made.
