Volvo Launches 100 Experimental Self-Driving Cars Into Goteborg's Traffic
|   Thursday, December 05, 2013
Volvo and the Swedish authorities from the city of Goteborg officially announced that a project which aims to develop autonomous cars is in full development. This project will start with a batch of 100 cars, which will make their way through and near the town of origin of the Volvo brand. These are the first Volvo cars that can drive themselves in traffic when the driver engages "automatic pilot".

The project is officially called "Drive Me - Self-driving cars for sustainable mobility" and is the fruit of collaboration between Swedish car manufacturer, state authorities, Lindholmen Science Park, and the Goteborg city officials.
According to preliminary statements of the involved parties, the experiment involving these 100 autonomous cars that will freely circulate through Goteborg will be followed in 2017 by the sale of the first such models.

"Our aim is for the car to be able to handle all possible traffic scenarios by itself, including leaving the traffic flow and finding a safe ‘harbour' if the driver for any reason is unable to regain control. The public pilot will provide us with a valuable insight into the societal benefits of making autonomous vehicles a natural part of the traffic environment. Smart vehicles are part of the solution, but a broad societal approach is also necessary to offer sustainable personal mobility in the future. We believe that this cross-functional co-operation can give this development a boost," explains Erik Coelingh, Technical Specialist at Volvo Car Group.
The declared purpose of those at Volvo is to develop by 2020 car models in which the occupants will not suffer serious injury or death.

"Autonomous vehicles are an integrated part of Volvo Cars' as well as the Swedish government's vision of zero traffic fatalities. This public pilot represents an important step towards this goal," says Hakan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car Group. "It will give us an insight into the technological challenges at the same time as we get valuable feedback from real customers driving on public roads."

"Hardly anyone thinks twice about being in an airplane that flies on autopilot, but being in a car that drives by itself while the driver reads a book is still quite a revolutionary thought for many people," said Samuelsson.

Autonomous cars are not, in the opinion of those from Volvo, those which take over full control. These models help the driver get out of common situations in traffic, the queues on the streets or on highways, finding parking, and running at cruising speeds. Thus, besides the fact that the machines can operate completely autonomously when running with 130 km / h on the highway, guided by signs, and by other machines using an army of sensors, they are able to seek, and occupy one parking place, after it leads the driver to their destination.

"Sweden has developed unique co-operation between the authorities, the industry and the academic community. This has resulted in a world-leading position in traffic safety. Autonomous vehicles and a smarter infrastructure will bring us another step closer to even safer traffic and an improved environment. It will also contribute to new jobs and new opportunities in Sweden," says Catharina Elmsäter-Svärd, Swedish Minister for Infrastructure.
