Volvo Gets Ready to Officially Unveil the 2015 XC90, this October
|   Saturday, June 21, 2014
The latest Volvo XC90 has entered its final stages of production, before being unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, this October. Spy images, showcasing the vehicle in its final avatar, have just come in and despite heavy external camouflaging, experts claim most final touches have been added already. A small group of journalists was invited by Volvo, to cover their vehicle, at their Arctic test facility and this meeting took place behind closed doors.

The updated XC90 is waiting for an August 2014 reveal, right ahead of its official unveil. The 2015 XC90 is part of Volvo's new design creation, which includes vehicles built on a light weight platform. Engineers have confirmed using aluminum and parts of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, on multiple parts, mostly on its interior. This seven seated SUV, codenamed V526, borrows numerous design formulae, introduced by its predecessor back in 2002.

Multiple changes have been carried out, including an increase in base dimensions, over the outgoing model. The upcoming Volvo XC90 is 100 mm longer than its predecessor and slightly wider and taller too. Interior space for second and third row passengers have increased, which results in better head, leg and shoulder room. Increase in boot space is appreciated, which finds practical importance in numerous activities.

Volvo claims that their updated XC90 is the lightest vehicle in class, thanks to its aluminum SPA front suspension towers, which makes its structure lighter than a conventional chassis. These suspension towers are riveted and glued on to its inner wings and steel bulkheads. These are further separated into five distinct compartments, four out of which – front overhang, rear overhang, rear luggage space and cabin - can be adjusted according to a user's needs.

Although, this chassis is designed to accommodate a four cylindered pot, it can be designed to support all wheel drive, plug in hybrid, rear axle and complete electric drive trains. The interior on this vehicle needs special mention. Its dash board features large, 9.5 inch touch screen device, which immediately propels Volvo, out of most of their competitors' reach. Heavy button fascias, common on most previous vehicles, have been replaced with more popular, convenient to use and aesthetically appealing round buttons and knobs.

The touch screen has been designed exclusively for greater vision, which prevents windscreen reflections at all times. Unlike most other smart phones and touch screen devices, this screen can be controlled via a gloved hand. This can be quite useful while driving your Volvo in low temperatures. The central screen is user friendly and has clearly laid out instructions, which can be used effectively, even by first time users.

All engine options, powering this vehicle, will have four working pots. Power outputs are yet to be ascertained, even though, we can expect average figures from both their petrol and diesel variants. Diesel engines are to feature an advanced i-ART fuel injection technology, which Volvo claims, has never been seen before. Improvement in fuel economy, within the range of 15 – 35 MPG, is expected on all variants.
