Volvo Focuses On Plug-In Hybrids, Even Though They Have Electric Car Technology
|   Thursday, February 26, 2015
Volvo will focus on developing plug-in hybrid vehicles, although it has the necessary technology to launch electric cars series, says Lex Kerssemakers, Vice President of product strategy department. The Swedish brand official explained in an interview with the British from Autocar that there is no reason why Volvo should introduce on offer large scale production of electric models at that moment, but he would not hesitate to do so once the market, or legislation will require this.

In other words, as long as there will not be strong demand for electric models, or the most important markets on which Volvo activates will not force the manufacturer to launch 100 percent electric powered models, there will not be electric cars offered by the Swedish manufacturer.

Currently, the company focuses on the popularization of plug-in hybrid models based on the V60 and XC90. The Volvo platforms are already prepared for the future "electrification" because they are completely modular and flexible, explains Kerssemakers. But the future of Volvo electric vehicles will be clear once a development of the batteries will take place and consumers will perceive this category of vehicles as attractive from all points of view.

The current plug-in hybrid technology provides much of the expected answers from electric cars and those at Volvo believe that such hybrids are the best option.
Volvo has provided an electric model series in 2013 on certain European markets. It was available only in leasing with a fixed cost per month. At the end of use, the vehicle is returned to the company, to analyze driving style and the efficiency of the propulsion system. The availability of the electric C30 production version has also been announced.

The figures for the Volvo C30 Electric sedan may seem rather bland: a range of about 145 km (90 miles), acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h (60 mph) in 11 seconds, a top speed of about 129 km /h (80 miles per hour), and a leisurely eight hours to recharge the 24 kilowatt-hour battery pack from 220-volt household outlet.

The XC90 right now has a 9.2 kWh battery pack that gives up to 40 km (25 miles) in the pure electric mode under NEDC conditions, what means 17 - 20 miles on EPA standard when it reaches the United States later this year. For maximum acceleration those at Volvo say 0 to 100 km/ h (60 mph) will stay under six seconds, with front and rear gas and electric power brought to bear. Note that the AWD system is also very useful in snow and slippery conditions.

"Our focus is the roll-out of our plug-in hybrids. Once there is a more sustainable business case behind full EV we can do it - our platform is scalable and fully flexible. But we must see how the EV business evolves and what pressures there are from fuel efficiency requirements and cities closing borders. With plug-in technology we have some answers now - good efficiency and the option of driving in and out of cities on electric power alone. For now, we can offer the best of both worlds", said Kerssemakers.
