Volvo Finished Upgrading Plant Which Will Produce New XC90
|   Friday, May 02, 2014
Volvo has completed investments in its plant in Torslanda, which recently reached the venerable age of 50 years. Here, Volvo will produce the next generation of the XC90 SUV.

Volvo is making final preparations before launching the next generation XC90. The SUV is expected to reach the market next spring, and is already anticipated by a number of concepts in the last European car exhibitions.

The Swedish manufacturer has expanded its plant production capacity from 200,000 to 300,000 vehicles annually.

Volvo claims that this investment was a necessary step to achieve the sales target of 800,000 cars per year, set for the next period. The project is quite ambitious and qualified by many as unrealistic, seeing that in 2013 the Swedish manufacturer sold only 427 840 cars.

Most of the changes brought in the Torslanda plant targeted the bodywork sections, where the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) new modular platform would rise, ready to serve several upcoming models including the XC60, S90, S60, V60. The XC90 will be the first product developed on this platform, hence the interest in this section.

The plant will use about 300 robots, but Volvo claims to have greatly reduced the level of automation in the production process, trying to adjust the balance between robotic workforce and employees.
In this way, the production process in the bodywork section will become more flexible.

Regarding the relationship between robots and workers, the new plant will work with smaller teams of five to eight people. This is a novelty, as in the rest Torslanda factory is working with teams of 15 or so. All team members will work closely, and be able to perform the tracking of production process, corrections, and maintenance. This created a more flexible manufacturing process, which is also capable of reducing stopping time and increase the efficiency volume of production. The new plant is expected to employ approximately 80 new skilled workers.

Investments made in Torslanda plant are part of a program totaling 11 billion dollars. These will be spent by Geely, the Chinese manufacturer that owns Volvo. A part of this amount will go to the development of new platforms and some to the new diesel and gasoline engines.

"With the investment in a new body shop we are creating the potential to increase production capacity in Torslanda from today's approximately 200,000 cars annually to 300,000 cars", said Lars Wrebo, Senior Vice President, Purchasing and Manufacturing. "This investment shows very clearly that Volvo Cars believes in Sweden as a production location and also the importance of having manufacturing close to research and development."

HÃ¥kan Samuelsson, President and CEO, stated that the new plant represents a serious investment by Volvo Cars in its future alongside that of the city of Gothenburg, which has served as its HQ for the last 87 years.

"It is particularly appropriate that we are today celebrating 50 years of car making in Torslanda at the same time as underlining our commitment to our future as a global car manufacturer by expanding our manufacturing capacity in Gothenburg," he declared. "What we are saying today is this: Torslanda is both our headquarters and our home."
