Volvo D4 Drive-E, The 181 HP Engine Is The First In Its Segment With Emissions Under 100 g / km
|   Sunday, October 27, 2013
The Volvo and its new D4 Drive-E engine developing 181 horsepower enjoys the reputation of being most efficient in the premium D segment, being the first engine with emissions lower than 100 g / km.

Volvo has eliminated the supremacy BMW in the segment of the four-cylinder diesel engines in the premium segment. At least in terms of engine efficiency, anyway. With the new 2.0 liter engine and 181 horsepower, the Swedes managed to get a better fuel consumption and performance than their German rivals, until now seen as an adequate benchmark.

The Swedish diesel engine range recognized by the indicative D4 introduces a new efficiency logo in the Volvo Drive E range, defined by the presence of the i-ART injection system. That means that in the future all models equipped with engines that benefit from an i-ART injection will be labeled Drive E.

The new D4 Drive-E impresses with its low fuel consumption of only 3.8 liters / 100 kilometers, but also with extremely low emissions. According to Volvo, the engine is the only one in the premium segment with such force that is able to break the barrier of 100 g / km.

Specifically, the diesel engine gives off emissions of 99 g / km for the V60, even when the car is equipped with 17-inch wheels. This performance is due to the intelligent injection-ART which provides feedback for each injector individually, thus helping efficient fuel dosing.

Not only the new D4 Drive-E proves to be efficient, Volvo claiming that the newly introduced T6 petrol engine, with 306 horsepower, can be efficient too, and demonstrates that with an official average of only 6.4 liters / 100 km.

The emissions are also very low for an engine of 300 horsepower: only 149 g / km. When installed on an S60 the engine offers two horsepower per gram of emitted CO2, the best in the premium D segment.

"During the development phase of our Drive-E powertrains, we promised to bring efficient driving pleasure into a new dimension. The official European NEDC certification now confirms that we outperform competitors when it comes to power versus CO2 emissions," said Derek Crabb, Vice President Powertrain Engineering for Volvo.

"We have created a range of smaller, more intelligent engines with power curves that give exciting driveability compared with engines with more cylinders. At the same time we continue to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions," he continues.

"The success of our V60 Plug-in Hybrid has also proved there is no contradiction between driving pleasure and low emissions. And we have already confirmed that the all-new XC90 will be introduced in 2014 with a petrol plug-in hybrid at the top of the range."

As a conclusion: "The first Volvo car back in 1927 featured a two-liter, four-cylinder engine. So you can safely say that the new Drive-E powertrain family remains true to our heritage."
