Volvo Claims New XC90 Will Revolutionize Driver Interaction With Cars
|   Saturday, June 14, 2014
The Volvo XC90 promises to revolutionize the way in which the driver interacts with the car's multimedia system, and even with the rest of commands that are not related to driving. The Swedes from Volvo will introduce on the production model a touch screen which will replace all commands related to climate, navigation and audio system. Also, a Head-Up Display will be integrated which will project key information on the windscreen.

This information can be displayed and modified by the driver with dedicated controls on the steering wheel.
This set of buttons is different compared to the ones that we find on the production cars available on the market today. The system from Volvo will not be dedicated to gadgets fans. This system will have the main role of being easy to use by eliminating the numerous buttons with complicated icons and awkward location.

The new Volvo XC90 will mark the debut of Apple's CarPlay system, a multimedia collaboration between the company from Coupertino and more car manufacturers that brings the iPhone menu of the driver on his car's multimedia system display. Thanks to that, car manufacturers will be able to provide superior audio streaming solutions, more frequently updated navigation and even parking payment solutions directly from the car that will be compatible with equivalent solutions in the various countries in which the system will be active.

Volvo says that a driver's hand control system in the other premium models has 30 or more buttons, scattered all over the dashboard, and it is difficult to operate, and even threatens to distract attention from the road. This is why Volvo promises to provide a system that does not require moving the eyes from the road to change the radio station, changing the destination entered in the navigation system, or even sending an SMS.

The Volvo interface, with which the Swedes promise to revolutionize how drivers will interact with their premium cars, is called Sensus, and integrates both hardware solutions (tactile buttons and touch screens) and software solutions (Apple CarPlay, for example) to obtain a system which can be operated by instinct. The future of this technical solution involves potential online updates, the ability to personalize, how data is displayed, available controls and buttons, and customize functions of several buttons on board.

"Using the screen is so logical that it will become part of your muscle memory very quickly. Information, navigation and media are high up and easy to check. The phone controls, application icons and climate controls are located low and are comfortable to reach and touch. All of this logic is based on extensive usability and user experience research and the latest technology," stated Dr Peter Mertens, Volvo Car Group's Senior Vice President Research and Development.

Lastly we have something that Volvo XC90 buyers will likely appreciate very much, is an interesting infrared detection system, thus allowing even gloved hands to operate the system.
