Volkswagen Wants Future Phaeton To Be More Comfortable Than S-Class
|   Sunday, January 25, 2015
Germany's Auto Motor und Sport claims that Volkswagen aims to make the future Phaeton to be the most comfortable model in the segment.
The Volkswagen Phaeton will get a whole new generation in 2016, according to Auto Motor und Sport, and the German manufacturer has high goals for this. According to the Germans from AMS, Volkswagen aims to make the future Phaeton to be the most comfortable model in the segment.

This objective could be achieved through a self-adjustable air suspension, which will be optimized in real time depending on the road surface and driving style.
The system would use a variety of sensors and video cameras to detect in advance the imperfections of the running surface, and to adjust the suspension so that occupants do not feel these imperfections. The Mercedes-Benz offers a similar optional system, for the current generation of S-Class.

Earlier rumors regarding the future flagship of Wolfsburg said the next generation of the Phaeton will be built on a completely new platform and will have an aluminum and magnesium bodywork, which will significantly reduce the total mass, announced. The Germans from Volkswagen could implement a hybrid propulsion system for the next Phaeton.

But, these details are well hidden by the representatives of the German group. In addition to the novelties under the hood, the Phaeton will benefit from semi-autonomous driving technology. The German publication cited above has information that suggests the implementation of a system able to drive the car without human intervention at speeds of up to 60 km / h.

Just like before, all information indicates the intention of Volkswagen to keep the unusual market positioning of the Phaeton. Thus, the luxury sedan will look to not stand out compared with the volume range of the manufacturer, and will focus on passenger comfort to the detriment of design fireworks. The current generation of the Phaeton was launched in 2002, and is preparing to leave the production pending the successor.

The next-gen Volkswagen Phaeton is set to arrive at the end of 2016, and will be the "the most comfortable car in its segment." For comparison, rivals include the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS, Jaguar XJ and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

This current Volkswagen Phaeton is available with two engines. One makes 237 hp and 497 Nm of torque which means it will go from 0 to 100 km /h (62mph) in 8.3 seconds before reaching the top speed of 237 km /h (147mph). Due to its weight of 2.7 tones accelerating from speeds above 80 km / h (50 mph) is a bit sluggish.
Also, the W12 engine displacing 6 liters is also offered which has a 6.1 second time from 0 to 100 km / h time and a limited 250 km / h (155 mph) top speed. The models are offered with an automatic gearbox only.

The version with the longer wheelbase adds an extra 120 mm, which is a great improvement in overall available space. The trunk holds 500 liters, about the same volume as the Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ, but falls 60 liters short compared to the Mercedes S-Class.
