Volkswagen Unveil 560 BHP Displacing Extreme Rally Cross Beetle
|   Tuesday, February 18, 2014
If you thought the Volkswagen Beetle was a petite little bug, without the capabilities of a high speed monster, think again. Volkswagen has just revealed their 560 BHP displacing Rally Cross Beetle, at Chicago's Motor Show. This all wheel drive rally tuned vehicle, will take part in most Rally Cross Championships across the world this year, while making a formal track debut in Austin, Texas this June, at the Summer X Games.

Volkswagen is however yet to officially comment on technical and mechanical specifications of this vehicle.
Confirmed reports have come in about this vehicle sporting 560 BHP, even though experts think of a direct fuel injected turbo charged TSI engine of unspecified capacity. When compared to the most powerful production Beetle - the GSR – which produces 207 BHP along with 206 ft lb of torque, we can clearly determine raw power from this vehicle.

The Beetle is light weight, which gives it an added advantage in class. Clearly its power to weight ratio is superior to other super minis in range, owing to the use of light weight materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber. Volkswagen showcased a VWVortex Super Beetle last year, which was based on the Golf R's four wheel drive technology.

A 2.0 liter engine displacing 500 BHP on a Beetle chassis, was beyond our imagination at that point and the vehicle performed with superior precision, right off start. A four cylindered EA888 engine, sporting the Super Beetle tag line was also showcased, although it had no relation with their VWVortex, which is not confirmed for production. Volkswagen's new Beetle could draw ample inspiration to their Polo R Rally Cross, designed for Carlos Sainz during Barcelona X Games, which was later scrapped.

Volkswagen's Polo R Rally Cross displaced 550 BHP along with 627 ft lb of torque and was capable of accelerating from 0 – 60 MPH within 2 seconds. Similar performance is expected off this machine as well, even though formal tests are yet to be performed. Volkswagen have teamed up with Andretti Autosports, owned by former Indycar and F1 World Champion Michael Andretti.

They have also hired reputed drivers Scott Speed and Tanner Foust. While Foust will sport the sponsorship tags of Rockstar Energy Drinks, Speed will sport 7-Up's colors. They will initially start their season racing with modified variants of the Polo and will shift to these supped up Beetles, soon after. Volkswagen's supped up Polo has been derived from their Global Rally Cross dominating Polo. Hence, similar performance is expected this year round too.

Global Rally Cross Championship is held around May each year, while Volkswagen should introduce their Beetle by the middle of this season. Volkswagen is currently celebrating the 65th anniversary of their Beetle Type 1's arrival on American shores, while close to 5.5 Million units have sold across America in this time being. This is however not the first Beetle to feature modification, as John Button's Beetle Mk1 was tuned to take part in the European Rally Cross Championship during 1970.
