Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept Debuts At Detroit
|   Tuesday, January 26, 2016
With the new Volkswagen Tiguan was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Tiguan GTE concept was eagerly anticipated and now it has arrived and it has quite a dynamic look.

At Detroit a new concept called Active Concept Tiguan GTE debuted, which has a spicy aspect with off-road elements, including huge 245/70 R16 wheels with BFGoodrich tires, modified bumpers, unpainted plastic wings, swollen hood, and a roof with integrated trunk and headlights.

Volkswagen is using the Detroit Auto Show to regain Americans's hearts with a hybrid version of the new Tiguan. While still at the concept stage, the Tiguan Active GTE promises a crossover with low emissions.

We might be tempted to believe that the new Tiguan Concept Active GTE is a direct result of the Dieselgate scandal or we could accept that the Germans were planning this for a long time, a hybridization of the range and the new Tiguan is a natural release. Either way things are looking good.

Whatever the scenario, the concept of a hybrid crossover was unveiled just a few hours before the official opening of the Show in Detroit.
The new Tiguan Active GTE is based on a turbocharged engine, a direct-injection unit with 150 horsepower and a torque of 250 Nm. But the petrol unit is complemented by two electric motors: one that develops 54 horsepower for the front axle, and another that offers 114 horsepower to the rear axle.

So when you draw the line, the Tiguan GTE Active Concept totals 221 horsepower and has a four-wheel drive 4Motion. Under normal driving conditions, the Tiguan offers rear propulsion. If it detects a loss of adhesion, the 4x4 system sets in motion the front wheels by means of electric motors. The driver can select a 4x4 regime, or he can choose one of several modes of operation: On road (Comfort or Eco), Off-road (Rocks, Sludge & Sand, Gravel), Sports, Snow, Charge (battery is charged while driving) and battery Hold (keep the battery charged).

Regarding the functioning of the hybrid Volkswagen officials argue that the Tiguan GTE Active will start every time electrically, but later driving modes selected by the driver should be available.

In the case the driver decided to run without emissions, VW claims that the 12.4 kWh battery will be sufficient for a total range of 32 kilometers. Along with gasoline, required for the conventional engine, Volkswagen claims that the range can go up to 933 kilometers. The lithium-ion battery can be charged either by the petrol engine or from an electrical outlet.

The Crossover's performances are very good. By combining the two sources of propulsion, it can guarantee a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.4 seconds on its way to a top speed of 193 km / h. As a novelty in the segment, the Tiguan GTE Active Concept also has gestures recognition facilities.

Inside, the Germans have prepared an infotainment system which communicates with the occupants through a screen measuring 9.2 inches. This system was first presented internationally at CES 2016 and provides compatibility with the Auto Android, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink technologies.
