Volkswagen Shipped First XL1 Car With 0.9 l/100 km Fuel Consumption
|   Friday, June 13, 2014
Volkswagen XL1, the most economical production car to meet current standards, has been delivered to the first customer. The ultra-economic model from Volkswagen costs 110,000 euro in Germany, after many years of research have been invested in its development; the expensive materials from which it is made also contribute to the high cost.

In contrast to other press releases, Volkswagen representatives were reticent in their statements, preferring to publish a picture of the customer with his new car at the completion of delivery.
So we know that the first XL1 series has an exterior white onyx shade with a black and gray interior.

The German manufacturer will provide the market with only 200 XL1 models, which means that their value will go up even more once the customer list will be closed, although Volkswagen will not allow customers paying the 10,000 euro for the model via leasing to keep them.

With the exception of car damage, a unit the chance to achieve impressive resale value over the years, but this fact will never be exploited because of the XL1's unusual trading systems. Volkswagen chose to limit production of the XL1 model due to the high cost of this model, but the integrated diesel electric hybrid technology will be implemented gradually in the Wolfsburg manufacturer's range.

The most effective model so far offered by Volkswagen enjoys a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a two-cylinder diesel engine and an electric unit. The TDI unit develops 48 horsepower, while the electrical unit contributes an extra 27 horsepower.

The assembly is coupled to a DSG automatic transmission with seven reports and a lithium-ion battery pack. Thanks to its hybrid system, the model can provide a pure electric driving range of 50 kilometers (31 miles). The diesel-electric coupling on the XL1 manages to give the new model a 12.7 seconds acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in, and enables it to reach a top speed of 162 km/h. Even so, the XL1 model became the most economical series model in the world, with a consumption of 0.9 l/100 km (261.3 mpg US / 313.8 mpg UK) and emits just 20 g CO2 / km.

The XL1 stands at 3,888 mm length, 1,665 mm width and 1,153 mm height. For comparison, a VW Polo has a length of 3,970 mm, width of 1,682 mm and a height of 1,462 mm. A sports car like the Porsche Boxster is also taller by 129 mm (1,282 mm). So, the XL1 has peculiar dimensions, but it impresses nevertheless.
Its weight is just 795 kg, 227 kg of which represent the entire drive unit including the battery, 153 kg the running gear, 80 kg the equipment and 105 kg the electrical system. That leaves only 230 kg out, precisely the weight of the body, produced mostly from CFRP.

Only 23.2 percent (184 kg) of the XL1 is made from steel and iron. 21.3 percent (169 kg) is made from CFRP, while Volkswagen uses lightweight metals for about 22.5 percent of parts (179 kg). The rest of the weight is distributed among various other polymers (like polycarbonate side windows), metals, natural fibers, process materials and electronics.
