Volkswagen Reveals 2014 Golf R at the Detroit Motor Show
|   Thursday, January 16, 2014
The latest variant of Volkswagen's Golf R has been showcased at Detroit this week and this vehicle is powered by a 296 BHP displacing engine, propelling it from 0 – 60 MPH within 5 seconds. Technical specifications consist of a 2.0 liter turbo charged petrol engine, based on a four wheel drive train with rear electronic differentials. This engine is a tuned variant of the EA888, powering the Golf GTI.

Significant modifications have been made, which are quite evident.
High pressure induction valves, cylinder heads, turbo charger and pistons have been installed, enhancing power displacement. The engine is mated to a six speed manual transmission system, although an optional five speed automatic is also available. Volkswagen is all set to rival Porsche's 911 with this vehicle, which claims to have a top speed of 155 MPH.

Volkswagen has installed their latest 4Motion Haldex permanent all wheel drive train, which they claim solves wheel spin and slip issues. Torque displacement has been increased by 100%, which is distributed equally to both axles. This generates balance while XDS+ electronic differentials, fitted on front and rear wheels, distribute braking potential between the front and rear, depending on load, while new brakes enhance safety.

This vehicle has been lowered by 5 mm, which gives it better traction, reducing body roll, while tighter suspension settings ensure additional comfort and drive ability. When compared to older models, this variant feels driver friendly and agile. Dynamic Chassis Control, progressive steering and damper assist is available, while Volkswagen currently offers three drive modes – Sport, Normal and Comfort. Fuel efficiency has improved, while an ECO mode takes care of general mileage woes.

Throttle response and gear shift patterns can be adjusted according to individual needs, while wider tires are provided as standard. 18 inch rims provide decent support and grip, while optional 19 inch rims can be opted for better visual effects. While manual transmission variants are available for near £30,000, the automated version could be yours for an additional £1,200. Final prices are yet to be announced though. This vehicle is expected to make decent profits, as inquiries have been high since its official reveal.

However, what Volkswagen failed to mention earlier was that, it could be available as a Limited Edition model, although final announcements are yet to be made. Volkswagen is currently offering three door variants of this hatch back, although five door variants will suffice only on popular demand. This vehicle was designed to be a sports hatch, while it offers a decent level of touring potential as well.

Major exterior modifications have not been made, although do not be fooled by this wolf in sheep skin. It is one of the most powerful production Golfs we have come across so far, while Volkswagen has high expectations from this car. Minor modifications to the head lamp, front grille, and air intake vents have been made, although they do not have a massive impact on overall designs. Volkswagen's Golf is a small looking hatch back and the R should do justice to its brand.
