Volkswagen Presents Future Connectivity Solutions Via Connected Golf Concept
|   Thursday, January 29, 2015
The Connected Volkswagen Golf Concept debuted at CES 2015, the most important event in the IT world in the first half of the year, along with the Golf R Touch Concept. Unlike the R Touch Concept, the Connected Golf concept shows the connectivity options the German compact has, by using the the current generation of the MIB II multimedia system.

This system supports several operating systems and is compatible with most smartphones and tablets on the market.
The multimedia system allows applications running on the driver's mobile phone through the Mirror Link, and supports both Android Auto as well as Apple Car Play.

Those of Volkswagen presented at CES two concepts associated with the multimedia system: Trained Parking System and Intelligent Charge. The first uses a video camera to scan the route of the vehicle to a parking place frequently approached by the driver and can take over the controls at the request of the driver's vehicle to perform semi-automatic parking. In the future, those at Volkswagen are talking about the possibility of autonomous parking of vehicles equipped with this system and the driver could make remote requests, such as starting the engine and air-conditioning or leaving a parking space on request.

Because the exhibit from CES, on which the Connected Golf Concept is based, is the electric version of the German compact, the Germans presented the Intelligent Charge system too, with which it will be associated in the future. We are talking about an inductive charging system for electric vehicles, which eliminates the need for cables. These vehicles should have a set of special lights to notify the driver about the situation of battery charging. Thus, the dedicated phone application should inform the driver about the time and charging status at any time.

Volkswagen is one of the first automakers who integrated the great majority of smart phone operating systems in its car models, such as Golf, based on App-Connect. The three interfaces of software, on which App-Connect is based are Mirror Link, Auto Android (Google) and Car Play (Apple). Through these interfaces the driver and passengers are able to use many different applications for smartphones via the infotainment system.

Connected Golf is equipped with many other novelties, on top of the Volkswagen-Net applications. For example, media control allows the integration of tablets and smart watches into the infotainment system. It also uses a special application that creates an entertainment system for the rear seat.

Regular routes is the name of yet another function. Through this function the navigation system automatically detects if there are any changes in the daily route to work and proposes an alternative route if it is available.

Next we have Parking Guide. It comes with a technology which actively looks for parking spaces, and has a high probability of finding available parking places.
"The two inventions of the century, the car and the computer, are gradually coming closer together. We need to design future mobility to be even more intelligent and even more networked," said Martin Winterkorn, Volkswagen CEO.
