Volkswagen Plans on Installing New CNG Drive Train on Next Generation Polo
|   Sunday, February 09, 2014
Plug in hybrid is an interesting and highly popular drive train technology nowadays. Volkswagen has gone a step forward and revealed A Compressed Natural gas (CNG) variant of their latest face lifted Polo. This vehicle is expected to go into production next year, while its first batch should be available across showrooms by late 2015. At a news conference in Germany this week, insiders revealed that alternate power sources are currently under development, even as Volkswagen is working on a range of superminis.

Volkswagen has named their Plug in hybrid technology as Twin Drive, while they claim it can be combined with both diesel and petrol drive trains. The Golf GTE is an interesting vehicle, which is currently under development and insiders claim that it uses an advanced lug in hybrid technology along with a standard 1.4 liter petrol drivetrain.

A directly mounted transverse engine, with direct fuel injection technology is currently the chosen drive train, powering their Golf GTE, while other similar creations from Volkswagen, include the Twin Up, Cross Blue SUV and XL1. The Concept XL1 was hugely popular across the globe even though production plans were not confirmed, as Volkswagen promised high fuel efficiency and refinement on this vehicle.

The Polo however is based on a different platform, which makes it unique from multiple aspects. Vehicle specific adaptations needed to be made in order to achieve optimum performance. Hence, work is currently being performed to suit system requirements of the Polo, Golf and other small vehicles. Total electric range on these vehicles is yet to be revealed, although we expect something in the range of 30 – 35 Miles.

Urban commuters are a rage across various markets. Hence, Volkswagen plans on offering people what they demand. Silent electric power is also under consideration as it is efficient as well as suitable for urban use. It is fuel efficient as well as provides decent range for daily commuting. Various market segments are currently being developed for the urban commuter, as it maintains a narrow profit margin, due to high sales.

Both petrol and diesel electric hybrid drive trains are currently under consideration, although final production plans should be available soon. We plan on getting you latest news about Volkswagen and their plans regarding the near future. Cost of production and development is currently under consideration, even though CNG is not a new fuel source.

However, this needs infrastructure development before being launched on a massive scale. Official word regarding Volkswagen's plans about setting up infrastructure is yet to arrive, although we are waiting eagerly for the rise of a new source of commercial fuel. Smaller petrol CNG hybrids are more likely, as it could ensure domestic refill, without the need to set up large commercial refueling facilities.

Various factors are currently under consideration, although TGI and TSI technologies are seemingly doing well across global conditions. Stay tuned for latest updates as Volkswagen gets ready to unveil official details about its new CNG technology as well as latest variants of their Polo and Golf.
