Volkswagen Passat TDI Set A Record In The U.S.: 77.99 MPG Or 3.0 liters/100 km

To promote the spread of diesels in the U.S., but also to prove to everyone how economic the models Volkswagen can make, it has set a new world record certified by Guinness Book of Records. The American Division of the German manufacturer organized a tour along 48 U.S. states. The route consisted in 13,071 km (8,122 miles) of road driven in both urban and extra-urban.

At the end of the challenge, the hero, a Passat Diesel had managed to deliver an official fuel consumption of just 77.
9 MPG (3.0 liters / 100 kilometers). It's a new world record, which exceeds by 0.45 liters the old performance. Also, the obtained consumption for Passat TDI is better even than that obtained by a hybrid car on the same route (3.64 liters / 100 km).
The Passat's journey began on 7 June at 12 pm in Volkswagen's headquarters in Herndon, Virginia and ended in the same place 17 days later., Wayne Gerdes has been driving (he has made a career out of hypermiling and has set mileage records in over 100 vehicles, as well as achieving the record for lowest fuel consumption in the 48 U.S. states with a hybrid vehicle), an auto journalist, along with Bob Winger, an electronics engineer involved in energy and conservation projects. The performance of the two is even more important as the series version, sold in the U.S., promises in the datasheet a fuel consumption of 5.4 liters / 100 km in the extra urban area. Therefore, the final value is a record obtained with difficulty and special techniques.

"To cover 8122 miles on just 104.94 gallons of fuel is nothing short of astonishing and shows just how economical our TDI Clean Diesel vehicles can be. Even for everyday drivers, the mileage benefits of our TDI engines are significant: Volkswagen has no fewer than six TDI Clean Diesel models that achieve an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 40 mpg or better on the highway" said Jonathan Browning, president and CEO of Volkswagen America.

Seeing that a base Passat TDI Diesel with a 6 speed manual box averages 43 mpg (5.47 liters / 100 km) on the highway, the drivers had to do a few tricks to reach 77.99 mpg. "We felt we had a good chance of beating the existing record with the Passat TDI," said Gerdes, "but to smash it by averaging 77.99 mpg is really impressive and a testament to the potential of Volkswagen's TDI Clean Diesel vehicles. Obviously, we employ some specialized techniques to achieve such figures, but there's no reason why owners of TDI vehicles shouldn't be able to achieve great mileage with a few simple pointers" he continued.

Among them, Gerdes indicated using downhill inertia to crest an uphill sectior, coasting between intersections as opposed to using heavy braking and acceleration, plus obeying speed limits, because the difference in fuel economy between 55 mph (88.5 km / h) and 75 mph (120 km / h) can be as much as 30 percent.
