Volkswagen Group Plans on Launching Vehicles Based on Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology
|   Tuesday, November 26, 2013
People at Volkswagen are not particularly keen on launching their latest hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle across global markets as they fear the technology is not advanced enough. Hydrogen fuel cell is one of the highly talked about and most researched alternate fuel cell technology we have today although final tests need to be conducted in order to consider this for practical use. Commercial viability is yet to be ascertained, post which we could actually see this in real world situations.

Arch rivals Hyundai, Toyota and Honda are working on alternate fuel cell technology of their own although Volkswagen was the pioneer in this technology in Europe. They have an upper hand as a result, in this part of the world and considerable tests are being carried out to ensure safety and proper usage in future. Although most of its tests and simulations are perfect, Electric Drive Train System Expert for The Volkswagen Group, Rudolf Krebs is not satisfied with the end results just yet.

We have just been told that Rudolf eyes an end 2020 date for reveal, within which this technology should prove its worth. Volkswagen plans on becoming the world's greatest manufacturer of Eco technology based vehicles by 2018 and Rudolf spoke on the topic at the recently concluded Los Angeles Motor Show.

The hydrogen fuel cell technology is one of the biggest breakthroughs of the century and it is not wise to rush through just yet. Designing a vehicle will not be enough in order to make it a viable prospect. Suitable infrastructure and awareness needs to be built too. This requires sufficient time and resources which needs to be pooled in. Hence, Government cooperation is required at the time of launch.

We are sure to catch up with some hard core action in the automotive segment within the next decade. Hydrogen technology has zero emission although they do not have a limited travel distance applicable to battery powered vehicles. Hydrogen energy has its downsides too. For example, if you are running solely on hydrogen power, you are bound to lose close to 40 percent of your initial energy.

As a result it is convenient to attach an electric motor along with its hydrogen counterpart for better efficiency and performance. As of now Volkswagen plans on launching electric vehicles with hydrogen cell for back up performance although future vehicles will also be hybrid plug in for the moment. In case of long journeys it is convenient to switch to hydrogen fuel although electric power can be used comfortably for travelling short distances.

Volkswagen has been using the MQB platform extensively for designing new vehicles and future vehicles are expected to be built on it too although considerable modifications need to be made in order to turn this into something viable. Cost saving is the primary concern right after getting this technology on track and various processes are kept in mind in order to turn this into reality. Volkswagen plans on launching 14 new hybrid vehicles by end 2014.
