Volkswagen Golf R Touch: The Concept That Moves From Conservative Buttons To Touch Screens
|   Tuesday, January 13, 2015
Volkswagen unveiled the Golf R Touch concept to show that they want to give up classical buttons in favor of three large digital screens, able to process the gestures of the driver.

Volkswagen could not miss the CES 2015, the largest technology exhibition held in Las Vegas. The Wolfsburg manufacturer has revealed the Golf R Touch concept as a hypothesis for the future Volkswagen dashboard.

The surprise of the Germans comes in trying to anticipate a decisive change in future models, which will give up current conservatism functions in favor of sensory experiences close to tablets or smart phones.

To expose the new technologies the Germans used a Golf R with 300 horsepower, within which we have defined three new areas of interaction based on gestures and tactile functions. Volkswagen says that in this way the customers will have a much safer experience and more intuitive and can easily customize colors and graphics of the multimedia system.

The first and perhaps most interesting of all the announcement is the development of the Internet for the next-generation VW infotainment system which will be called MirrorLink later this year.

MirrorLink will be the second version of the German manufacturer's "modular infotainment platform" (MIB II) in the United States.
According to official press release, customers will have no less than 16.7 million colors for the environment.

In the central area of the dashboard we have a 12.8-inch screen used to replace the classic multimedia system, which interacts with all passengers. Below this is another screen, this time only 8 inches, by means of which the car settings and the air conditioning system are controlled. A 12.3-inch screen, installed in place of the traditional instrument cluster is borrowed from the Audi TT and its Volkswagen Passat big brother.

"The Golf R Touch is equipped with three displays: the 12.8-inch high-resolution infotainment system touch screen; a Control Center (8.0-inch with touch feedback) arranged beneath it to control vehicle, climate control and media functions; and an Active Information Display (digitalized instruments, 12.3-inch)," says VW in its press release.

In addition to all these digital areas, the Golf R Touch comes with a 3D camera mounted on the roof and able to recognize gestures. When the driver touches the ceiling with his hand the lighting controls for the interior appear on one of the three screens mentioned earlier.

Also, a forward and backward movement at the roof level can pull or open the lens hood which covers the panoramic roof. A similar gesture at the seats level allows their adjustment and touching on the side make adjustment commands on one of the screens.

Certainly, this is misleading at first, but it actually is a safe way to do things. This keeps most attention on the road. In conclusion, it is easier to gesture in the air than to redirect your eyes on a screen, look for a button, and get to push it accurately.
