Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport Concept: Just A Hatchback With 400 Horses And Lots Of Carbon Fiber
|   Wednesday, June 03, 2015
Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport debuted at Wörthersee. It has 400 hp and a hybrid powertrain. Volkwagen has prepared an even bigger surprise than the Golf GTI Clubsport concept, whose onset took place at the same GTI tuning Wörthersee Festival. We are talking about a concept called Golf GTE Sport, only that its power is even more impressive: 400 horsepower delivered from a plug-in hybrid propulsion system.

Built largely from carbon fiber, with a very futuristic look, the new Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport, has very little in common with the Golf GTI hot-hatch, regardless of any conceptual version.
It uses not one or two engines, but three, with a total power estimated at 400 horsepower. Along with an all wheel drive system, the front futuristic optical blocks, rear pillars which create a whole with wheel bosses and the side sills, this concept is the most radical in the entire compact history of Volkswagen.

The design is one made to impress. The classic doors were replaced with some butterfly type and the bodywork is painted in a seductive matt white, called White Club, and is constructed entirely of CFRP - carbon fiber reinforced plastic. The same material dominates the most visible areas in the passenger compartment, including the shell-shaped seat frames, with seatbelts fastened in five points, inspired by the world of motorsports.

The internal combustion engine is a 1.6-liter TSI petrol unit taken from the VW Polo R WRC racer, poised to produce 299 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. It is helped by two electric motors, one mounted in front, in the 6-speed dual clutch gearbox, and the other is mounted on the rear axle. It can produce 85 kW / 115 PS and a maximum torque of 330 Nm. The second electric motor has the same power output but the torque goes down to 270 Nm. Thanks to these two units, the maximum torque is equal to 670 Nm and the distance that the concept can travel in pure electric mode is estimated at 50 km. Whenever it's possible, the concept model is powered only by electricity.

In the top equipment range, the GTE concept can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 280 km/h.
It also impresses with its frugality, the model only needing only 2.0 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers driven, thanks to the car's hybrid powertrain.

The doors of this concept are extended in part on the ceiling and have a VW XL1 - up and slightly forward - opening system. These doors hide an extraordinary interior, made of carbon fiber and dedicated only for two people who are separated by an extremely high median tunnel. The driver has a little lying position, like that of a race driver and the steering wheel in front of him appears to be taken directly from Formula 1 cars.

The Germans say that this concept is the future of VW Golf GT models, as well as the way future concepts based on this hot-hatch will look like, which are becoming more radical as years flow by.
