Volkswagen Golf Alltrack: The German Compact Goes Off-Road
|   Tuesday, September 30, 2014
Volkswagen will exhibit at Paris the new Golf ALLTRACK. It is the second ALLTRACK model in the VW range after the current Passat and is a practical proposal for those who do not know what to choose between a Golf station wagon and a Tiguan.

After Seat decided to experiment with the off-road compact segment with the Leon X-perience, its concern brother Volkswagen Golf seems to follow suit.
At the Paris Motor Show, the Wolfsburg manufacturer will officially launch the Golf ALLTRACK version.
It is the second Volkswagen product which receives a derivative ALLTRACK model after the current Passat generation. According to Volkswagen officials the new Golf ALLTRACK targets niche customers, being positioned between the current Golf Estate and the old Tiguan. The new model attempts to combine the practicality of the station wagon with the off road potential of the second.

Based on the Golf Estate, the new ALLTRACK version comes with redesigned front and rear bumpers with plastic protection for the underbody, larger bosses with new side skirts and roof brackets. To penetrate into rough terrain, ground clearance increased by 20 mm compared to that of a standard Golf.

The engine range will be supported by a gasoline unit and three diesels. The only gasoline engine has a displacement of 1.8 liters and is ready to deliver 177 horsepower. It is enough for a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h to take 7.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 217 km / h. Average fuel consumption is estimated at 5.6 liters / 100 km and CO2 emissions reach 158 g / km.

Those who prefer diesel can choose the entry-level 1.6-liter, rated at 110 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque, enough for a 12.1 seconds sprint from 0 to 100 km / h and a top speed of 186 km / h. Fuel efficiency stands at 3.9 liters / 100 km, while emissions stop at 124 g / km.

A more powerful diesel will be the 2.0-liter unit, ready to deliver 150 horsepower and 340 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 8.9 seconds and top speed stops at 207 km / h. The average fuel consumption announced by the manufacturer is 4 liters / 100 km and emissions of 127 g / km.

There will be a top version too powered by the same 2.0 liter diesel, but modified to deliver 184 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque. The sprint from 0 to 100 km / h takes 7.8 seconds and average fuel consumption reaches 4.2 liters / 100 km. All engines announced above come with a four-wheel drive, 4 Motion, and electronically controlled differential.

The model has an "Off-road" driving mode that activates the hill descent function, to change the accelerator pedal characteristic and off-road configuration of the ABS system. It is complemented by off road-tune suspension. Also, the Golf ALLTRACK can tow trailers with loads up to 2000 kg (4409 lbs).

The 4Motion system has the latest Haldex-5 setup. This system disengages the rear wheels in normal running to move only the front wheels and thus save fuel.
Also, the Golf Alltrack model is equipped with XDS at the front and rear axles. This system optimizes steering response by braking the wheels on the inside of a curve during fast driving.
