Volkswagen Golf 7: World Car of the Year 2013
|   Tuesday, April 02, 2013
The competition "World Car of the Year" might turn into the VW Car of the Year in the World, after the German brand won the fourth title in five years of competition. The only year that Volkswagen has not taken the possession of the prestigious trophy, was when it has not released any volume model. In 2013, the car of the world was declared to be the Volkswagen Golf 7, after competing with Mercedes-Benz A Class, Porsche Boxster / Cayman and Subaru BRZ / Toyota GT86.

Volkswagen received the first title WCOTY in 2009 for the Golf 6, a year after being launched on the market in Europe and after losing the title to Opel Insignia and Ford Fiesta. In the ranking of WCOTY, at that time, the Golf fought and won against both the former competitors and the new the Fiat 500, which was to be declared Car of the Year 2010 in Europe. Then, in 2010 came the Polo model, which beat the Toyota Prius and Mercedes E Class. 2011 was a year of rest for the sole reason that there were no models to compete, but in 2012 it was the turn of the Up model, which exceeded votes for the BMW 3 Series, and Porsche 911.

The Volkswagen Golf 7 received 414 points from the 58 judges and journalists of the most important European automotive publications according to the competition site. Far away behind the Golf is the Toyota's GT86/Subaru BR-Z, with 202 points. The Volvo V40 is ranked of the third, with 189 points.

The Volkswagen Golf is a veteran of this competition in the last 38 years managing each time to reach the top 3. Also, the German model won the competition twice before, first winning this award in 1992 with the third generation.

Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen: "To win this award again shows that the Golf is and remains in a class of its own all around the world. This car sets new benchmarks again and again, not least in terms of efficiency and environmental credentials. Soon, for instance, it will also be launched as a plug-in hybrid and as a 100 percent electric car."

As announced on the competition website, factors that weighed heavily in the jury's eyes were reliability, and very good progress in terms of safety, consumption, aerodynamics and comfort, plus what else contributed over the time to the commercial success of the car. The success of the Golf is undoubtedly due to the MQB modular platform, first used in the construction of the new Volkswagen Golf 7.

In the eco section, the World Green Car, the Tesla Model S managed to beat Renault Zoe and the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid. The Porsche Cayman / Boxster has overtaken the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ / Toyota GT-86, in the category dedicated to the sports models.
The most beautiful car of the year, is the Jaguar F-Type, the jury preferred it before the new Mazda6 and Aston Martin Vanquish.
