Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE - The Concept Announcing A Future Hybrid Crossover
|   Tuesday, January 20, 2015
Volkswagen unveiled at the Auto Show in Detroit the Cross Coupe GTE concept, a hybrid crossover rated at 355 horsepower, which can be powered by any electricity outlet.

Volkswagen used the Detroit Auto Show to unveil a new version of the Cross Coupe concept, this time baptized GTE as proof of the hybrid technology hidden under the body.

Designed to anticipate a future crossover for the North American market, the new Cross Coupe GTE has a revised front aspect with an aluminum grille, LED optical blocks and more generous wheel passages with gloss plastic and chrome inserts, along with a slightly lower roofline with a spoiler mounted on the tailgate and a set of 22-inch rims.

The interior has seats for five passengers and keep the simplistic air, but is also full of the ergonomic elements with which Volkswagen has accustomed its customers. High quality materials such as nappa leather, and aluminum inserts can also be found.

The equipment is intensely digitized with a 12.1-inch board tools, taken from the Audi TT, a touch screen for climate control and a new 10-inch screen for the multimedia system. It's basically the same configuration as in the Golf Touch concept, introduced at the new technology fair in Las Vegas.

The concept unveiled at Detroit measures 4.84 meters in length and is 2.02 meters wide, which means it's about four centimeters longer and about nine centimeters wider than the current Touareg.

Under the bodywork based on the already known MQB modular platform, is a turbo VR6 petrol engine displacing 3.6 liters, which develops 276 hp and 350 Nm of torque as well as two electric motors - one for each axle. The front engine develops 54 hp and 220 Nm of torque, while at the back it comes with 114 hp and 270 Nm of torque. The electrical energy is supplied by a lithium-ion battery of 14.1 kWh, located in the transmission tunnel, that can provide a range of about 32 km in 100 percent electric mode.

In total, the system produces 355 hp and a maximum torque of 380 Nm. The sprint from zero to 96 km / h (60 mph) requires 6.0 seconds and the maximum speed is 209 km / h; fuel consumption stands at just 3.3 liters / 100 kilometers.

"The Cross Coupe GTE is the ambassador of a new design language developed by Volkswagen for the U.S." says Klaus Bischoff, chief designer at Volkswagens. He goes on saying "The concept car has a commanding presence; it is powerful with a look that could almost be described as aggressive. Numerous details hint at how we envision a future production SUV model for North America. The underlying concept combines German engineering and design with a vehicle that suits the American lifestyle. That means high efficiency, clear and powerful design, logical operation and supreme quality-combined with lots of space, superior performance, and outstanding comfort."

In general, the acronym GTE applies to all sports models in the Volkswagen portfolio, which have a high-tech plug-in hybrid drivetrain. They offer the driving characteristics of a grand tourer (GT Gran Turismo) and due to one or more electric motors and a battery (E from Electric), they likewise provide zero-emission driving.
