Volkswagen Considers 10-Speed DSG For The Future, And other Techs
|   Tuesday, April 30, 2013
A while ago it seemed that the age of dual clutch technology will stop evolving further. The cap is at 7 speeds, so we need to check other options, like developing 8, 9 or 10 speed automatic gearboxes. Since almost every major automaker seemed to be following this road, there was some credibility behind the theory.

However, there is still hope yet. The Germens at Volkswagen have recently announced that they are working on a 10 speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox.
This announcement was made by the big boss himself, CEO Martin Winterkorn, at last week's 2013 Vienna Motor Symposium in Austria. No further details were given on this matter except that they are working on it.

During the course of his presentation, he revealed that his company is focusing on another piece of tech that receive little attention lately, and that is diesel engines. Right now, VW is busy developing a diesel engine that will produce about 134 horses per liter of displacement. The engine will incorporate variable valve timing, high-pressure injection systems operating at over 43,000 psi, as well as electric superchargers known as e-boosters.

In spite of this dedication to diesel engines, the manufacturer is also devoted to alternative solutions. The 2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid has just been announced and, as the name implies, it will be a plug-in hybrid car. Thanks to the modular platform promoted by VW, the hybrid tech will eventually spread to other models belonging to the group. Another Porsche is in the works, the Cayenne SUV, as well as the A3 and A6 from Audi, plus the Golf and Passat from Volkswagen.

Winterkorn stated during his presentation that "Over the coming years we will electrify all vehicle classes in this way and help electrically powered motoring to make the breakthrough."

Lastly, natural gas will also see some attention from VW. Already a natural gas version of the up! is on some markets, and there are plans for more to come. The first to see it will be the Golf and Audi A3 lines.

As a part of this process, the boys from Audi have went as far as to develop their own synthetic natural gas, by means of a process called methanation that works together with the energy generated from wind farms. The consequence is that this fuel is CO2 neutral when burned in a natural gas vehicle.

Winterkorn explained that over the medium and long-term, various technologies will exist side by side. That is the reason why Volkswagen is investing so heavily in electrified and natural gas powertrains in addition to improving the existing gasoline and diesel systems.

All that effort is made in order to reach a corporate average C02 emission level of just 95 grams per kilometer by 2020. The factors that will make that goal possible are the enhancement of the combustion process, an intelligent lightweight design together with innovative operating strategies as well as optimization of friction levels and thermal management, according to Winterkorn.
