|   Thursday, April 03, 2014
In short, the Volkswagen Crafter successor will be made in Poland from 2016. A new factory is being built for that purpose at Wrzesnia in Wielkopolska and the start of production is scheduled for the second half of 2016. With the new plant, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will create at least 2,300 new jobs.

"By taking the decision to build the Crafter in Poland, we are setting the course for the strategic realignment of our light commercial vehicles," said Leif Oestling, head of VW's trucks division.
He continues by saying that "Crafter is an ideal candidate for all markets in growth around the world, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will help to advance further on the path of global manufacturer."

The new factory at Wrzesnia will be the second location in Poland for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, after Poznan.
"The new plant in Wrzenia will become the second site in Poland for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles after Pozna, where the urban delivery vehicle, the Caddy, has been rolling off the assembly line for more than a decade. Our experience with the production of the Caddy in Poland has been excellent and the region around Wrzenia offers an ideal blend in terms of business, infrastructure and the labor market", said Dr. Eckhard Scholz, spokesman for the Board of Directors of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand.

Based on the decision to build at a new location from April 1, 2014, Jens Ocksen, currently a member of the Board of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, and responsible for Production and Logistics, will take over responsibility for the production of the Crafter model and become Board Director of Volkswagen Poznan Sp. He will also remain a member of management at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

"The factory in Wrzesnia will benefit from the proximity to our production location in Poznan in all aspects of logistics, suppliers and especially on local experience," notes Ocksen, and details saying that international and local suppliers will be situated near the factory.

"We created more jobs in the region. Moreover, we expand our production network in Poland and benefit from two decades of success in the production of light commercial vehicles. Whether it is Caddy, or about T5 from Poznan, or in the future about Crafter model from Wrzesnia, commercial vehicles 'Made by Volkswagen in Poland' is a success story that continues through today's decision to build a new plant"completes Ocksen.

The location of the future factory covers about 220 hectares, and will include a hall for bodywork, one for dyeing and one for final assembly. The construction is scheduled to begin in late 2014 and the initiation of production is expected in the fourth quarter of 2016.

The Volkswagen Crafter is now built on the same assembly line as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, under contract from 2005. Factories in Ludwigsfelde, near Berlin and Dusseldorf, Germany, have an annual capacity of about 150,000 vehicles.

Through the new Volkswagen plant in Poland the German manufacturer will benefit from lower costs of labor. In Poland the costs are about one-sixth of those in Germany, according to German car association VDA.
