Volkswagen Beetle Celebrates 70 Years Since Its Launch

Officials from Volkswagen pay homage to the most legendary cars in its history as well as world automotive history. Now it's time for the model that laid the foundations of the brand - Volkswagen Type 1 or Beetle (Kafer in German). But why did the Beetle become so famous?

First of all, the simple design was reliable but also came with an affordable price that set in motion the whole of Germany after World War II and later on the whole world too.
Being produced in some 21,529,464 copies, the Volkswagen Beetle is the most sold car in the world created on one platform.
Although Volkswagen Beetle production started exactly 71 years ago, at the end of 1945, its history goes back over 80 years.

In 1935, Adolf Hitler ordered Ferdinand Porsche to create the "people's car" in German "Volkswagen" (Volks - nation / people, wagen - car). To create the Beetle Ferdinand Porsche was inspired by Tatra models that had been equipped with an engine placed behind the rear axle, as well as copying more ideas too.
Because of that fact one million German marks were paid out in compensation to those from Tatra in 1965. However, the final prototype was ready back in 1938, but because of the Second World War it came off the production line only in 1945.

At the end of the war, the KDF factory has gone under the control of Great Britain. Major Ivan Hirst was the one who suggested using factory to create means of transport for the Allied forces. It received an order for 20,000 Volkswagen Type 1s. The first model came out the Wolsburg factory a few days after Christmas.
However, in 1945, under the patronage of the British, the factory had produced only 55 copies in large part because of lack of raw materials from suppliers and other problems related to the consequences of war. In the next two years the production was limited to 1,000 copies per month and only in 1949, when the production returned to German hands, sales began to really burst, the Beetle being called a German economic miracle.

The Volkswagen Beetle / Kafer had a lot of combinations and bodyworks, and its platform generated new models such as the Volkswagen T1 (Type 2) van, the elegant Karmann Ghia, or even the first Porsche 356, which began the history of another famous brand!

Throughout its 71 years, the Volkswagen Beetle succeeded in promoting a positive image of Germany worldwide. This fact has been demonstrated by the huge sales figures too. The officials from Volkswagen decided to stop production of the original Beetle in 2003. It was produced at that time only in Puebla, Mexico.

To commemorate the legendary model, a limited edition of 3,000 copies was made called "Last Edition", which copies the Beetle from 1978, but with modern technology on board, including disc brakes on the front axle, halogen headlights, immobilizer, injector for engine with a displacement of 1.6 liters, and catalyst.
On 30 July 2003, the last copy Volkswagen Beetle was produced which is now in the museum in Wolfsburg.
Right now, it seems that Volkswagen will need a model just like the Beetle for its revival after Dieselgate.
