Volkswagen Announces That The New Phaeton Will Be Fully Electric

Dieselgate has some positive consequences it seems. Once it caused the uproar in the international media, and is preparing to empty the treasury of the Volkswagen Group, the emission scandal attracts the first change in the the German conglomerate's strategy.
The Dieselgate scandal would open a Pandora's box and the Volkswagen Group is preparing a new era, a cleaner one. In a statement published on the German website we find the new strategy for models with diesel engines.

First, all models equipped with diesel units will receive SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) filters or AdBlue to reduce pollution emissions. The Germans promise to use the best technologies to protect the environment.

"The Volkswagen brand is repositioning itself for the future," said VW AG CEO Dr. Herbert Diess. "We are becoming more efficient, we are giving our product range and our core technologies a new focus, and we are creating room for forward-looking technologies by speeding up the efficiency program."

Also, the MQB platform, already widespread across the whole group will be further developed to support plug-in hybrid versions. They will benefit from a 48 volt electric engine, available with efficient gasoline engines, diesel or CNG. This platform will serve for underpinning electric vehicles whose range reaches 300 kilometers (186 miles).

Besides the MQB platform there will be another new electrical architecture, named MEB, intended for compact passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles. This will be standardized to be adapted on many body types, and will ensure zero-emission cars a range between 250 and 500 kilometers (155 to 310 miles).

However, the great novelty has to do with the Phaeton model, Volkswagen's flagship, expected to return on the market for several years now. Because the predecessor was a promoter of new technology, Volkswagen has redesigned the equipment precisely because the new Phaeton has be a conglomerate of future technologies expected in the VW range.

Moreover, Phaeton will serve as an example with regard to the alternative propulsion too.
The spearhead of the Germans promises to become a technological showcase. Moreover, the Germans are planning an electric version of the Phaeton. Currently, there are no details on the powertrain, but we can expect the same solution designed for the future Audi Q6. In short, an electric vehicle with a range that could reach 500 kilometers.
Besides the electric version, the new Phaeton will have new connectivity services and also a series of safety systems, which will approach the idea of autonomous running.

Although a release date is not clearly stated, Volkswagen officials argue that the new Phaeton will be the flagship for the next decade, which makes us think that the debut could be seen in 2020 at the beginning of a new cycle for VW.

"The Volkswagen Phaeton has embodied the brand's technological competence and brand ambition from the first generation onward," the VW board said in a written statement. "The future generation of the Phaeton will once again be the flagship for the brand's profile over the next decade. The specification features a pure electric drive with long-distance capability, connectivity and next-generation assistance systems as well as an emotional design."
