Vauxhall Facility in Luton is still General Motors safest bet
|   Monday, September 01, 2014
The Vauxhall facility in Luton is probably one of those longest running automotive engineering factory of General Motors, which has been completely and inexplicably functional since 1905. However, this automotive factory does not build any more cars.

Then why is General Motors still interested in that particular site? It is primarily due to the fact that this particular facility has been constructed over about 35 hectare of land and is possibly the largest engineering sites of General Motors.
So, it has emerged as a home to a £168 million investment.

This new investment has particularly made this site a talking subject in all of Britain. This investment comes as a direct directive for the construction and manufacturing of a new generation of its life old production, the class of Vivaro van.

This move by General Motors have certainly cemented this Vauxhall plant's future, as much as up to 2015, by maximizing its efficiency in transportation of raw materials for production as well as in supplying of parts to this particular plant in order to overcome manufacturing hindrances.

Once again, this very Vauxhall facility has become the largest commercial vehicle facility in Britain and to match that, General Motors have been incrementing Luton's manufacturing process with Tata Steel's mills for an efficient manufacturing process to tackle proper engineering expertise as well as stretched workforce.

Quality standards are a major criteria for General Motors and for that reason, a wide spectrum of considerable variety in development process are being considered. Vauxhall can, at the moment, be quite flexible to build as much as 102 body variants of this Vivaro van.

All other suitable options, including options for wheel base platform lengths are being considered, as well as side panel options, rear tailgates and floor panels – all are being considered to deliver and maintain General Motors' high level of quality of these product.

Separate clearances have been issued for production tolerances which are being produced on a separate scale and it also means that they will be assembled in press and body shops during final assembling. There have also been some reports of improvements which are being added to make this new installation of Vivaro vans much more exciting.

One of such reports state that tolerances on these vans will be improved, and made more than something of 6mm, which is what Vivaro has. As far as this workforce at Luton is concerned, all looks just fine and under control. There have been some rumors about a certain degree of expansion.

This facility currently holds about 1200 workers who all are prepared for a massive production module before Vivaro's launch which is going to take place this month. The original plan suggests that this facility can actually produce about 45000 items in a single production shift and half of those are intended for an overseas transfer.
All of this has gradually led to an expansion plan and as reports confirm, one has been set up with an extra shift of 500 people to improve vehicle production to 65000 a year.
