US Military To Replace Humvee With More Modern And Efficient Model
|   Sunday, September 20, 2015
The United States Army announced results for the tender on delivery of new armored vehicles that will replace the legendary Humvee. The contract worth 6.7 billion dollars was signed with the Oshkosh Corporation.

The Pentagon is preparing the retirement of the famous Humvee. For about 30 years it was the emblematic vehicle of the US Army. It could also be called legendary, if it had not been preceded by the even more famous Jeep, which remained the classical image of the military car.

The competition was also attended by two other companies: aeronautics giant Lockheed Martin and AM General.

Those from AM General are the same Humvee producers which is to be retired from the US Army. For the new contract, the company proposes a new Humvee called BRV-O, with a hybrid engine and modular armor. When it comes to the delivery of such machines, AM General has the most experience of the three finalists in the running for the contract offered by the Pentagon.

However, even if it is specialize in aircraft the rivals from Lockheed Martin had hoped to strike a blow in the military car segment.
Lockheed Martin has worked with British Aerospace Systems to create a replacement for the Humvee. The British have produced the armor, the propulsion is based on a technology similar to that used by AM General on the new Humvee and the engine is one of high power produced by Cummins.

The successful tenderer had to be chosen only among the three since no one else attended the competition. Initially, the three companies had submitted to the commanders and officers in the army 22 different prototypes, each of which was tested for 14 months. As a result, the Oshkosh company project called L-ATV (Light Combat All-Terrain Vehicle) was elected.

In size the L-ATV is larger than a Humvee (the L-ATV is almost 3 times the weight of the original Humvee design) and will be available in two versions - with two and four seats for passengers. The vehicle weighs seven tons and such a weight is favorable for transport with helicopters.

The car has an independent suspension for each wheel and uses a 6.6 liters GM Duramax turbodiesel engine with eight cylinders.
The suspension movement can be up to 50 centimeters, if needed. The maximum speed on drivable land is 70 percent higher than that obtained by Humvee, and can reach 160 km/h (100 mph).

The contract involves the construction of 17,000 vehicles, with 5,500 of those going to the Marine Corps. The first cars will be used by soldiers in about nine months. The program will be extended to the year 2024 and by then some 30 billion US dollars will be invested in these vehicles.

"With America's Soldiers and Marines in mind, the program team successfully met both Services' requirements for affordable, achievable capability advancements that will make a true difference. Today's award brings us a step closer to delivering a flexible vehicle that balances the payload, performance, and protection critical in the operating environments of today and tomorrow" declared Sean Stackley, the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Development, and Acquisition).
