U.S. Luxury Sales: Mercedes Tops BMW
|   Friday, October 05, 2012
In the United States, sales of Mercedes Benz models have increased 7 percent in the last month. This fact helped the premium German brand to extend their advantage on fellow competitor BMW to 5,221 units. The fight for the Number 1 United States luxury brand still goes on however. Thanks to Autonews, we have a more detailed look on some other brands.

In the US in September, the Mercedes brand sold 23,156 units. A significant part of these sales have been the updated versions of the C Class compact sedan and GLK compact sport utility.
In the same time frame, BMW sales have increased 0.1 percent to 21,761 units, while the sale figures at Toyota's Lexus increased 36 percent to 20,386 vehicles.

Back in 2011, BMW finished the year with 2,715 more deliveries than Mercedes. "The moving parts are coming together nicely for us to have a nice finish for the year," said Steve Cannon, head of Mercedes-Benz's U.S. operations, last month in an interview.

In September, the sales of the 3 Series went down 17 percent to 7,731 units. The Germans reported X1 1,570 sales last month, about half as many as the X3 SUV.

Mercedes sales have reaped the benefits this year from the updated C Class sedan and new coupe version, models introduced last year. US sales of the C Class went up 15 percent in September to 7,872. GLK deliveries surged 66 percent, to 3,206 last month immediately following the update to the compact UV.

Cannon thinks that "We're beating the 3 series sedan-to-sedan" and that the new C-class coupe is "doing phenomenally well."He believes "We're taking the fight to them."

For this year, Japan's Toyota has set a 25 percent increase to 250,000 units. Until September, Lexus sales had a 26 percent gain to 170,990 vehicles. The vice president of Lexus sales and dealer development, Tim Morrison, stated that his brand is lagging too badly to take the 2012 luxury sales trophy. "I don't think we have a chance this year."

In the last month, the sales Hondas' Acura brand increase 44 percent to 14,366. In September, GM's Cadillac sales went down 1.3 percent to 12,579 vehicles.

Audi has seen an increase of 26 percent to 12,302, according to a statement made by the company. Porsche, the Stuttgart based automaker that is also part of VW's group, sold 2,736 vehicles in the US last month, a 26 percent increase.

The Infiniti brand from Nissan saw 9,445 vehicles being sold, an 11 percent gain from the previous year, said the Yokohama based company said in a statement.
This September, Ford Motor only sold 6,802 Lincolns, a 3.1 percent fall from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, in the past month, Jaguar-Land Rover deliveries climbed 20 percent to 4,640 the UK brands said in an e-mailed statement.
Expect those numbers to rise in the final three months of the year, as the luxury sales competition usually goes up this time of year. "Seasonally, it's some of the best numbers for them," said Jesse Toprak, an industry analyst. "The setup for a great end to the year is all there."
