Unveiling The 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider
|   Tuesday, July 03, 2012
The new 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider is here in all its splendor. The second model in McLaren's lineup, the car will be available for shipping from this November onwards, while ordering one starts immediately. This convertible supercar arrives one year behind its cousin, the hard-top MP4-12C, and comes with all of its features introduced in the 2013 update.

Therefore, the 3.8 liter V8 engine is here to provide us with 616 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque.
If that isn't enough for you, then you probably need a Veyron. Compared to the hard-top version, weight gain is negligible; the convertible roof system only adds about 88 pounds, making the final weight of the car revolve around 3200 lbs. It takes 17 seconds to operate the roof, and it can be doen at speeds of up to 19 mph. The carbon fiber ‘MonoCell' chassis is used here as well removing the need for further strengthening. That means that performance figures are about the same as its cousin. The 7 speed dual-clutch transmission makes sure the speedometer travels from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds; the quarter mile is left behind in 10.8 seconds at a speed of 134 mph. Top speed is 204 mph.

Behind the driver and passenger lies a rear windscreen which can be electronically lowered and raised. When the roof is lowered this acts as wind deflector, and even with the roof raised the rear window can still be lowered, thus allowing the engine's rowdy exhaust noise to be heard by the car's occupants.

One downside is that with the roof raised there is only 1.8 cubic feet of storage in the back of the cabin; lower the roof and you practically have to carry your bags with you. On the other hand, bespoke luggage has been specifically designed to fill that space. Also, it comes supplied as standard when the car is bought. A rollover protection system is also installed. Each of those tall buttresses contains a steel structure that will absorb impact energy and protect the driver and passenger in case anything goes wrong.

Moving to the inside of the vehicel, we find that the design has not changed much comared to what the hard-top model had. However, a few new features are now available across the entire MP4-12C range; these include semi-aniline perforated leather and Alcantara trim. Furthermore, we also have a new wheel pattern for the 19 inches of wheels for 2013 as well as vehicle lift feature. The latter feature can be quite important.
Thanks to it, drivers will be able to raise the ground clearance (40 mm at the front and 25 mm at the rear) in order to avoid the worst bumpy roads can do. What's more, the vehicle can operate in a raised state at speeds of up to 37 mph.

If this beauty leaves you wanting, but your wallet is as empty as Greece's treasury, you might want to head out to McLaren' site and experiment with their configurator; at least that's free.
