UK Car Production Exceeds That Of France After 48 Years
|   Wednesday, January 22, 2014
With the year 2013 ended the first estimates to determine the ranking of European countries that have produced the most cars last year shall be made. Germany is the undisputed leader, followed by Spain. But the great battle for third place is intense, as France is about to be dethroned by Great Britain. This is a turn of events that has not been recorded since 1966.

The English enjoy a steady increase of the automotive market and therefore of local production.
Industry sources estimate that the last year in the United Kingdom have 1.55 million cars been completed. This is a huge increase from the 1.47 million units produced in 2012 and 1.35 million units produced in 2011.

On the other hand, France is facing a decrease in the local market and massive staff reductions. Production does not fare any better, this trend also being felt in automotive production, which is expected to fall to just 1.54 million units in 2013 from 1.66 million units in 2012 and 1.88 million units in 2011.

In the United Kingdom, local brands such as Jaguar, Land Rover, Mini and Vauxhall have contributed to the increase in production figures. Even luxury brands like Bentley and Rolls Royce had a positive influence on this evolution. In addition to those trademarks, which have their roots planted deep in United Kingdom soil, there have been some Asian brands with factories in England responsible for the increased production: Nissan, Toyota and Honda.

Analysts said the UK car market will continue to grow in the coming years, first announcing forecasts reaching the threshold of two million units produced in maximum three years. In France, however production will continue to decline because of the euro's fall, overproduction, low trust in authorities and, not least, because of declining sales.

Tim Abbott, managing director of BMW's UK operations, thinks that UK will produce more cars than their French rivals by 2018 if this trend continues.
"All the indications appear to be saying Britain will be second in a few years," he stated. "It will be about the demand for the cars made in the UK but that looks to be there judging by the recent performance of the likes of JLR, Nissan and BMW."

That idea is backed up by Andy Palmer, Nissan Executive Vice President: "You could see it happening if UK plants are at full capacity, which they are not far off being."

82 percent of the cars made in the United Kingdom were exported.

If it managed to produce two million cars, Britain will surpass its all-time record that stands unwavering since 1972, a golden year for the British auto industry. Plants from this country built 1.92 million cars back then. Ranking first in automotive production is Germany still, a country that will not soon be overtaken as the absolute leader in Europe. In 2012, the Germans produced 5.5 million cars, a figure that exceeds the total units built by Britain, France and Italy, the next ranking country.
