Toyota Wants To Conquer Europe With The Mirai, Emulating The Prius
|   Saturday, September 12, 2015
The year 2000 was crucial for advanced technologies for Toyota when the first copy of the Prius hybrid in Europe was sold.
For 15 years now Europeans have enjoyed the Prius while the Japanese are preparing for a new revolution in the auto industry, which will be made, in their opinion, by the Toyota Mirai hydrogen-powered electric model.

Prius means "to go forward" and Mirai means "the future".
Mirai uses the Toyota Fuel Cell System (TFCS) that combines fuel cell technology with the hybrid one.

The system uses components developed by Toyota, such as the Toyota FC Stack, FC Boost Converter and high-pressure hydrogen tanks. Toyota FC Stack achieves a maximum output of 114 kW (155 hp) and a power density of 3.1 kW / L, and is the global leader.

A new high efficiency and capacity compact converter has been developed to boost power generated by Toyota FC Stack to 650 volts. Increased voltage made it possible to reduce the size of the electric motor and fuel cell count, leading to improved TFCS system.

The tanks has a structure with three layers of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and other materials used to store hydrogen at very high pressure of 70 MPa (or 700 bar).
A five-door compact sedan, the Mirai has four seats and a boot capacity of 360 liters. The model will have numerous amenities such as air conditioning, rear parking camera, satellite navigation system, LED headlights and handcrafted leather-covered surfaces. Safety systems will be those that have already become standard in premium models like lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control.

Toyota Mirai will be available in the first phase only on three European markets: Germany, England and Denmark. In short, they are the only countries that have invested in the network expansion of hydrogen refueling pumps – otherwise very limited. According to Toyota, Mirai will be launched later in other markets as the supply networks of this kind will be developed in Europe.

The list price of a Toyota Mirai in Germany is 66,000 euros excluding tax and Toyota sales volume expected for the first year is extremely modest: 50 - 100 units. The Mirai will be available in the UK at a price of 60,000 pounds (about 86,000 euros).
Toyota Mirai is produced in a number of 700 units in 2015 and will increase production in the coming years to several thousand. In Japan there are already 1,500 pre-orders.

We remind you that the Toyota Mirai has an electric motor that develops 153 hp and 335 Nm of torque, a fuel cell package with a high density of 3.1 kW / liter, and two tanks of 61.2 liters each, where are stored under a pressure of 700 bar 5 kg of hydrogen. The 5 kg of hydrogen powered only in three minutes are sufficient to generate electricity for a range of nearly 500 km! It seems that it really is the future, but it will come only when the infrastructure of hydrogen fueling stations will be as developed as that of LPG filling stations and the car price will be at least halved.
