Toyota Uses Fuel Cell Technology To Make Energy For Its Headquarters
|   Thursday, May 15, 2014
The first Toyota fuel cell model will hit the market sometime next year, but the company is already operating this technology to reduce costs and emissions at its one of the largest office buildings.
A 1.11 megawatts fuel cell station was installed at the Toyota Motor Sales headquarters near Los Angeles to generate electricity and reduce utility costs. It provides nearly half of the energy needed for the six buildings to operate in the summer, when the need is at its peak.

The fuel cell uses the same core technology as the system installed by Toyota on its future series model. The PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell technology, is most suitable for use in vehicles because it can be stopped and started very quickly, providing a short response time and reliability. The Toyota installation is the largest of its kind in the world, and is the first application of fuel cell technology in a stationary electric generator.

The Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cells used in cars (known as Polymer Electrolyte Membrane called fuel cells too) use hydrogen fuel and oxygen from the air to produce electricity.

The performance of the fuel cell technology is impressive. Thus, the supplied average power is equivalent to the electricity required by 765 American households. Also the power capacity is doubled compared to a network of solar panels of the same dimensions. Another important feature of this technology is the fact that it limits pollution. The expected reduction of CO2 is up to 1,500 tons during the peak hours of summer.

In order to be able to cope with the presumed sales of tens of thousands of vehicles per year, and to prepare for the FCV's wide popularization after 2020, Toyota has paid special attention of the research and development of fuel cell vehicles.

Furthermore, Toyota will continue the research and development activity into fuel-cell buses (via Hino Motors), stationary fuel cell cogeneration systems for residential use (via Aisin Seiki), as well as fuel-cell forklifts and other industrial vehicles (Toyota Industries Corporation).
Toyota is preparing to launch the first electric car powered by hydrogen (fuel cell) next year. The car will have a range of 500 km and hydrogen refills will be over in just three minutes, like a conventional car.

In 2016, a new FC bus jointly developed by Toyota and Hino Motors will be launched. The Toyota Group companies will share the technology and know-how that individual companies developed.

"We regard fuel cell vehicles as promising environmentally friendly vehicles of the future, with high total energy (Well-to-Wheel) efficiency. On the other hand, fuel cell vehicles are extremely versatile, with a long cruising range and a short fueling time. However, the hydrogen infrastructure needs to be developed. At the moment, each environmentally friendly vehicle has its own shortcomings, and it is up to our customers to decide which vehicle is best for them" , said Yoshikazu Tanaka, Product General Manager of the Product Planning Group.
