Toyota To Increase Yaris Production
|   Saturday, February 22, 2014
We might think Toyota Yaris has no chance of success with all the new B-segment hatchback models launched last year. And yet, the Toyota name is still recognized. Its reputation for reliability seems to have led to increased demand from European customers.

From June 2014, Toyota will start third shift operations at its plant in Europe to meet growing demand for its two products: Toyota Yaris and Toyota Yaris Hybrid.
The new Yaris Hybrid began production at the plant in France back in September 2010 and has been going strong since.

The Toyota Yaris is unique in its class, as it is the only model equipped with hybrid technology, making driving easier, with low emissions and, thus, has a larger audience than before.

A third shift will increase the workforce by 500 employees, which will be trained in Valenciennes, leading to a total of over 4,000 people at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF).

Until they get into the third round function, Toyota plans to introduce some Saturdays in the work program to meet the demand.

"Sales forecasts have led us to increase production plans by around 15 percent for 2014, for a total annual production volume of around 220,000 units," said Koreatsu Aoki, President of TMMF.

The additional manpower will be recruited as temporary staff. Employees from the two day shifts will also move to staff up the third night shift on a voluntary basis.
"TMMF will produce close to 1100 Yaris per day on three shifts versus 840 on two shifts today," declared Luciano Biondo, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing. "This new organization demonstrates the success of the "Made-in-France" Yaris on a very competitive segment."

"The new members will follow a 4-week training program, which can turn into an official professional qualification," said the Vice President of Administration, Alain Van Vyve. "This third shift is excellent news for jobs in the Valenciennes region of France, and will contribute to improve a local and regional economy that is still fragile," he continued.

TMMF had operated on three shifts in the past too, back in 2004 and again from 2006 to 2010 and once more in 2012.

Toyota's announcement in France comes in contrast with large French auto groups, Renault and PSA, which have serious issue with overcapacity.
Updated in early 2013, the present Yaris generation was originally released in 2011. This was followed by a hybrid version launched a year later. To make the hybrid version of the supermini, Toyota has had to reduce the size of its Hybrid Synergy Drive system (HSD). With the addition of an electric motor to the 1.5-liter engine, the HSD system is 20 percent lighter than the one used in the Auris Hybrid, but still provides 99 horsepower. Emissions stand at 79 g/km of CO2 and fuel consumption is rated at 80.7 mpg or 2.91 liters/100 km, a class-leading preformance.

In the UK, the new Yaris is priced from 10,895 pounds and the Yaris Hybrid costs from 15,495 pounds upwards.
