Toyota talks about the Scion FR-S

Akio Toyoda, President of the Toyota Motors and Grandson of the original Founder, recently questioned it's company's passion in its product line up. This spring, Scion is launching a brand new sports car, the Scion FR-S, in collaboration with Subaru. The product is completely in a new direction for a company like Toyota but never the less the automobile is set to hit markets by September.

The two Japanese Auto mobile companies set out in a joint venture to build a fun yet affordable sports coupe but Toyota claims full credits for the existence of the vehicle which is completely in clash with what Subaru was willing to announce.
The concept for the car was inspired by Toyota's very own legend Corolla that had a rear-wheel drive and was a favorite toy for the drifters. The original concept of the Scion FR-S involved a front engine and a prototype was built in 2007. Unfortunately the prototype was rejected and a new concept came to being in 2008, using Toyota's expertise and experience. The Sports car concept came to being in 2008 and since then many of the Toyota engineers including Tetsuya Tada have vigorously tried to make the car affordable, swift and light.

Of course Toyota's is willing to admit Subaru's efforts in the venture but still claims that most, if not all, of the working was done by Toyota and it's engineering team. They portray as if the car's plans and designs came from their own teams and Subaru merely had to bring the plans into reality. Of course Subaru is not willingly accepting any of Toyota's splash backs and is completely gloating about its involvement in the project including the contribution of it's new platform and chassis. Of course Toyota shared it's gadgets as well such as the enhancement of the engine by adding it's fuel injection into the designs and allowing the car to copy the Lexus LFA's nose hints.

When comparing the car to Subaru's and Toyota's other ventures such as the very own Scion BRZ, the FR-S has been told to be more about agility when the BRZ is about being stable. The makers bravely claim that the car has been designed as per the needs of young drivers and is tuned to respond to their quick actions .The car is completely agile with soft springs for fast steering and alert chassis. Even though when the car is said to steer abruptly or even spontaneously accelerate, the chassis is bound to slide despite it being completely neutral.

Of course when compared to modern sports cars the FR-S does not perform as powerfully. It's skinny tires do not have the grip that you may need but it surely is free and playful for the driver to enjoy. When asked about the wheels, the designer said they used the tires of Toyota Prius, which was no joke. This does bring in some concern but all in all, every part of the Scion FR-S is said to work in complete sync and can be very entertaining to drive. All you need is the right set of skills.
