Toyota Reveals a Track Only GT86 Griffon
|   Tuesday, June 18, 2013
The most dynamic Toyota GT 86 is yet to make its official debut at the Good Wood Festival of Speed 2013, insiders have revealed. This project is very important for TRD Griffon as it highlights the performance ability of TRD. Toyota claims that the Griffon is not a production ready version of the GT 86 and has been designed exclusively for racing purposes. This strictly meant for the track car features advanced weight saving measures and features excessive modifications to the drive train as well as the chassis, which is stronger than the production model of the GT 86.

The standard slip differential of the standard model has been replaced TRD's own mechanical differential while the gear shift ratios have been changed to 4.8: 1. A new cooling system has been added while coil over suspension along with TRD mono block calipers and a race specified brake pad have been added to the vehicle. The 2.0 liter Boxer engine powering the vehicle has however not been changed while the roof is composed out of carbon fiber.

Boot lid, bonnet, doors and the rear spoiler are composed of reinforced plastic and carbon fiber. Similar technology was also used to design the rear diffuser, front wing and the bumpers. The standard glass windows of the standard GT 86 have also been replaced by its polycarbonate counterparts. The driver's seat, ignition gauges, gear knob and ignition button have also been enhanced and every component has been replaced by TRD's in house designed parts. Takata seat belts and a Momo steering wheel have replaced the original components.

Toyota's new Chairman wants to see the latest super car being designed by both BMW and Toyota reach new heights. They want to break all previous records created by the Toyota Supra. However, the new vehicle should be completely different from the current GT 86 as two vehicles competing in the same segment would be a futile effort on the part of both companies. However, the engineers are working together closely on the new project and it is premature for the Chairman to speak on the issue.

Toyota and BMW joined hands earlier in 2013 to manufacture a vehicle jointly and this project is currently under development. The companies want to design a four door passenger sports sedan, very different from the GT 86 although the renderings are yet to be showcased. Officials from both companies are tight-lipped about the project and as a result rumors could not be confirmed. Inspiration is set to be gathered from the Toyota Supra which was discarded in Japan in 2002, post a very successful 25 year run in the market.

The new car will combine the best of German engineering and Japanese technology and is hence expected to make a lot of noise in the market once the vehicle is showcased. Although a specific launch date is yet to be announced, people are hopeful of an early 2015 launch, although company officials say that it is premature to comment on the situation.
