Toyota Presents Hydrogen-Powered Model Exterior
|   Wednesday, July 02, 2014
Toyota presented its first production model bodywork fueled with hydrogen. It is called FCV, but that name might not be definitive.

The launch of a series model is scheduled for 2015, and will be offered on the Japanese market first, and then for selected markets in North America and Europe. On the Japanese market, the model will cost about 7 million yen, equivalent to 50,500 euro (about 68,700 dollars or 40,500 pounds). This model will be offered only in areas where the hydrogen charging station infrastructure is sufficiently well developed to support customer needs.

The first hydrogen powered car from Toyota has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 10 seconds and offers a maximum range of 482 km. Refueling the hydrogen tank is done in just three minutes with a specialized charging station, the only place where this fuel will be available in the configuration needed to power the vehicle.

Toyota is not the first manufacturer to offer a hydrogen powered vehicle on the market, being overtaken by their countrymen from Honda and Mazda.

While Honda has offered the FCX Clarity in California, Mazda tested in Norway a special fleet of RX8 powered by this fuel for the purpose of a careful analysis of this type of fuel in real life.
The Germans from BMW and Mercedes-Benz have developed their its own tests with hydrogen-powered models having over 20 years experience in this field, although they have not yet offered a hydrogen powered vehicle that can be ordered by the public.

Moving on to the actual model. The front is not so bad looking with the thin headlamps that appear to have LED technology along with vertical day running lights installed in a large front bumper with a large lower grille, and equally large intakes.

The alloy wheels could do with an increase in size while the inclined roofline does not interfere with the rear end. Also, at the rear, there is a pair of funny looking stops plus a red bar, which crosses the width in the back and incorporates the reverse lights. A red triangle is there too, probably serving as a fog light.

Even in serial version, the Toyota FCV body has an unusual design meant to make the most of the tricks that ensure an optimal aerodynamic drag coefficient.

Toyota has been developing internal electric cars powered by hydrogen for over 20 years. Its system includes its own FC technology that generates electricity by chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, plus the high-pressure hydrogen tank.

This technology has been used on the Toyo FCHV, a SUV that was available to customers in limited numbers in Japan and the United States since 2002, which has also seen many improvements over the years. The company exploits this technology even in buildings helping to reduce costs and emissions in one of its largest offices.

Toyota Executive Vice President Mitsuhisa Kato, in charge of global research and development, said the goal is to provide operating costs similar to the company's hybrid vehicles, including the cost of hydrogen fuel. The cost to build a refueling station for hydrogen should be cut down by half by 2020.

Satoshi Ogiso, managing officer in charge of alternative vehicles, claimed engineers reduced costs by using components from their hybrid vehicles, including the battery, motor as well as control unit.
