Toyota Manages to Hit the Right Chords, with the 2015 Aygo
|   Friday, June 20, 2014
The Toyota Aygo, which had been cleared for production a while back, failed to undergo a full road test earlier on. However, we finally got the opportunity, to take it for a spin, to understand its true potential and point out its limitations. This vehicle shares its platform with PSA Citroen Peugeot, although, most of this vehicle has been redesigned, apart from the windscreen angle and rear passenger door.

The Toyota Aygo has quite a few characteristic features that have never been seen before.
The exterior shape, for one, surely needs special mention. The pointy front end, along with the trademark ‘X' grille, spreading forward into the head lamp design, has never been tried out before. Toyota is expected to work on a few personalization features, which are to be available at dealerships soon.

Three external paint schemes are currently available, which limits options by a fair margin. We surely hope Toyota addresses this problem at the earliest. Toyota should focus on a more periodic dash board design and lesser use of gloss, to highlight the cabin in a better way. The UK will be getting a three and five door version initially, which will be available in three trim levels – x, x-pression and x-play. Two Special Edition variants – x-clusiv and x-cite – will also be unveiled soon.

Numerous infotainment additions have been made so far, along with a neat new trim and upholstery, which justifies a minor price increase. Much like its predecessor, the upcoming Aygo features a 1.0 liter VVT-i engine block, which has been updated to a certain degree, for better performance and refinement. A five speed manual gearbox is attached to this engine block, while an automated can be yours for an additional £700.

Despite major additions that have been made over time, base credential remains static. The vehicle is lighter and more agile than before, which enhances handling, while improving fuel economy by a slight margin too. The Aygo performs decently over asphalt, although, we are yet to test it over wet / slippery surfaces. Absence of body roll, help instill confidence into the driver's heart, which can help people test the limitations of this vehicle.

We would however recommend that you do not push it too hard, or you might just spin out and risk injuries. Under steer kicks in when you least expect it, although, overall drive dynamics is decent and quite comfortable. The Toyota Aygo can be recommended as an urban commuter, as it meets every safety and comfort parameter, required by most clients.

Toyota has successfully implemented market leading standards and statistics, with this vehicle. It successfully merges the Panda's practicality, with the Up's elegance and maturity. As Toyota is currently working with PSA Citroen Peugeot, similarities are bound to surface. Both firms have however, still managed to keep their differences alive and this should go a long way in differentiating between the two, when it comes to building up individual brand reputation, in the long run! Stay tuned for interesting updates, from the automotive world!
