Toyota FT-1 Concept, Possible Inspiration For The Next Toyota Supra, Returns With a Changed Skin

After we saw last winter a red version of the Toyota FT-1 concept, the Japanese refresh the brand's fans memory with a silver version. The insistence on this topic can be considered an indication that the production model is under preparation.

Toyota surprised fans in January with a concept on which the audience associated immediately with a possible Supra rebirth one of the most representative models which the Japanese brand has ever had in the range.
It was called the Toyota FT-1 and speculation continued in the days following the prototype's official photos presentation. 2002 is the last year in which the Toyota Supra was part of the Japanese manufacturer's offer. The model was launched in 1978.

To be fair, the possibility that Toyota will develop a production model inspired by this concept is now a real probability, because the Japanese have published a series of photographs with a second version of the FT-1. Painted in silver, the concept does not evolve the design lines, keeping intact the original version aggression.

"It can really change your perception of it, the value of it, with just a simple thing like painting it a different color. I'm still fascinated by that. [Changing a car's color to get a new response] is nothing new but it's pretty interesting in the design world how you can change the perception of something just by giving it a different color." Stated Kevin Hunter, president of Calty, where both FT-1s were made.

When Calty presented its plan to Toyota at its Nagoya headquarters, the timing was perfect. At the 2011 Tokyo Auto show, Akio Toyoda had insisted, "Now we have a new slogan, 'Fun To Drive Again.'" And he made it perfectly clear that he wants a Supra-like car back in the lineup.
So he gave his blessing and Calty's in-house Supra-like sports car saw green light to become a concept car.

"We create these as theater. We want it to be believable within a certain understanding so that when somebody looks at this car they can imagine it on the road. We don't want to create space ships that look like science fiction. We try to create a balance with just the right amount of stuff to get everybody excited but it pushes the envelope that on a show car stage it looks dramatic.

The width of this car and some of the proportions are certainly extreme. In an auto show environment, things tend to shrink down so we try to go a little bigger than reality. As far as production capability, we don't worry about it [on a show car] because we're making a concept car. There are new exciting proportions coming that the public hasn't seen and this is part of it." said Hunter.

Toyota also confirmed that it intends to launch a new sports car on a platform developed with BMW for any production version of the FT-1. Also, the German manufacturer will use the platform for their own sports car, believed to be a replacement for the Z4.
In the recent past Toyota has also renewed its trademark for the Supra name.
