Toyota Aygo Intended To Have A Highly Expressive Design

Toyota Aygo has received at Geneva a new generation that promises to outperform its predecessor in all areas. Chief Engineer of the Aygo project, Kazuhiko Terai, discussed with the British from Autocar magazine about the changes that have been made to improve the model of the city's joint venture conducted by Toyota and PSA Peugeot-Citroen.

The new Toyota Aygo is the sister car to the Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1. Even if we talk about a new generation, the Franco-Japanese triplet retains the wheelbase, platform base, and the suspension of the first generation.

The bodywork is completely new, as well as 30 percent of the chassis, including a stronger rear axle, revised springs, new dampers and a thicker stabilizer bar. The new technical platform structure is new in a proportion of 10 percent.

The interior is more spacious, offering more space both vertically and horizontally. The luggage compartment also has a large volume, which increases by 29 liters, totaling 168 liters. The roofline is 5 mm lower, but headroom went up by 7mm. All in all, the new Aygo is 25mm longer measuring 3455 mm.

Unlike previous generations of the three models, engineers and designers focused to differentiate them as much as possible, without raising costs to exorbitant levels. Toyota insisted on a tilted windshield, a compromise achieved with their French partners, the result of which we all see in the press images of the three models.

The change was accomplished by moving the front pillars base, which led to the expansion of passenger compartment with 9 millimeters.

Those from Citroen had raised the idea with the pillars, painted black all the lateral uprights to give the feeling of a "floating ceiling", while Peugeot chose the simplest version, with body-colored pillars and the least stressed design.

Toyota stands in the opposite camp, with an "x" on the front, available in several colors (silver, white, red and black), available only as a contrasting color to the body.

Regarding the technical changes applied to the Aygo, the chief engineer of the project said that they focused on sophistication, maneuverability and efficiency.

The new Aygo weighs between 840 and 910 kg, depending on the equipment level while the engine compartment promises a high level of quietness, being equipped with additional antiphonal material.

The rear axle has an anti-roll bar, two millimeters thick, designed to increase strength and reduce body roll understeer.

"We wanted to improve driving dynamics on the new car, particularly for Toyota. So, for example, we have quickened up the steering ratio. We had long discussions with PSA over the A-pillar angle. We wanted a more sloped-back, sportier angle. That gives us more dynamic, expressive styling" declared chief engineer Kazuhiko Terai.

Only one engine is offered, a three-cylinder petrol unit, with 68 hp at 6000 rpm and 70 lb-ft of torque at 4300 rpm. It is rated at 95 g / km and 3.41 l /100 km (68.9 mpg) with a manual gearbox with five gears. An optional manual robotic "x-shift" promises 97 g / km and 3.49 l /100 km (67.3mpg).
