The X-Class Is Not The First Mercedes Pick-up In History, Not By a Long Shot

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class is neither the first nor the second pick-up in the history of Mercedes-Benz. There has been a time since the vehicle's presentation, which was labeled as the first of its class in the Mercedes' history. But the folks from Stuttgart surely know better – Mercedes has been building pick-ups for decades.

The Mercedes-Benz pick-ups were born decades ago. The pick-up 170 V was the first built by the company. It happened shortly after the Second World War and came on time, just when Germany was rebuilding its infrastructure.
In that context, Mercedes found salvation in the manufacture of a pick-up shortly after the Untertürkheim plant was back on his feet. Its production began in 1946, based on the limousine built between 1936 and 1942.

Shortly thereafter, in September and October, Mercedes launched versions for ambulance services and police, which were based on the 170 V model. In first year of production, 214 vehicles were built. By 1947 the number had risen to 1045.

In May 1949 Mercedes launched the W191 version. With this model the Sondermodell "S" (Special model) 170 S appeared a car that breathes luxury through every pore. The company built versions dedicated to ambulance services and, finally, pick-up versions. Many of them were shipped to Argentina.

The first Mercedes 180 D Ponton models dressed in the pick-up bodywork were sold in 1955. They were powered by the OM636 engine with a displacement of 1.8 liters, the first diesel units, introduced by Mercedes after the war. The engine developed 43 hp.

The W 115 was the orange pick-up that become famous over the years. But these vehicles have not worn the three-pointed star on the radiator grille from the earlier 70s. Presented to general public in 1968, the W 114 and W 115 series paved the way for what will be the E-Class in the company's portfolio. 1.9 million such a cars were sold from 1968 to 1976.

During development, the limousines with short wheelbase, long wheelbase, but also coupes, have been in the company's plans. Initially, a six-cylinder engine (114 W), 230 and 250, as well as four-cylinder units (W 115) were launched, alongside the 200, 220, 200 D and 220 D. The latter was the basis on which Mercedes-Benz Argentina created perhaps the most successful pick-up in the company's history.

Just like the luxury pick-up, X-Class, that model does not seem built as a true workhorse, but as a limousine with its appearance disguised as a pick-up. The German Railway Transport Company and Air Lines in Argentina have used it for various missions. The model was available with a two or four-door cabin and was powered by a 4-cylinder 2.2-liter diesel engine capable of developing 60 hp and a torque of 126 Nm.

A few years later, in 1979, Mercedes launched the famous G-Class, a robust and expensive military SUV. It was, naturally, reserved for high-risk missions so that its format was suitable for a pick-up.
Thus was born the G 63 AMG 6 × 6, a crazy mastodon with 3 decks and 6 wheels, powered by a V8 displacing 5.5 liters, and rated at 544 horsepower. It weighed 3.7 tonnes and went from 0 to 100 km / h in just 6 seconds.

It is true however that the X-Class starts a new era. The vehicle built in collaboration with the Renault-Nissan Alliance is avant-garde for the work and luxury segment, manufactured at Nissan's plant in Barcelona.
