The Volvo XC Coupe Concept, A New Step Towards The Future XC90
|   Friday, January 10, 2014
Volvo presented the first official images of the concept it will be exhibiting at the International Auto Show in Detroit. The Volvo Concept XC Coupe is a SUV version developed on the basis of the Coupe Concept, exhibited at Volvo's stand at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

The Scandinavian brand representatives say their new concept is inspired by the design of modern sports equipment and demonstrate the safety capabilities of the new SPA (Scalable Platform Architecture) architecture.
Besides, the new concept shows the new design direction of Volvo dictated by the Thomas Ingenlath, head of design at Volvo Cars.

Unlike the series model that we expected, namely the Volvo XC90, the XC Coupe Concept has only two doors and comes with 21-inch wheels. Same as with the concept shown in Frankfurt, the XC Coupe has LED tech with daytime lights arranged in a T shape inclined at 90 degrees, and the new "floating" grid of the Volvo brand and the bright signature of the rear light blocks. These features will be seen again on future models of the Swedish brand.

The prototype of the future Volvo XC90 is the second in a series of three concepts designed to foreshadow the new direction of style adopted for the future models based on the modular platform SPA.

The next generation anticipated by the Volvo Concept XC Coupe will be presented during the second half of next year, most likely at the Paris Motor Show. The final model will get two extra doors, offer seven seats instead of four, and will renounce the design fireworks, typically concept-only elements like the 21-inch wheels, frameless windows, or roof luggage rack integrated into the roofline.

The future Volvo XC90 series model will be fitted with three safety systems, a world premiere. The three systems are based on radar systems and cameras with which the car is equipped, and their role is to prevent collisions and accidents that occur frequently on the roads because of the driver's or pedestrians' inattention.
Practically, the Scandinavian SUV will benefit from an adaptive cruise control system, with direction control function, a lane keeping system with active steering control, and the prevention system of frontal accidents with pedestrians, cyclists and other cars through the automatic brake, even when pedestrians and cyclists are hidden in darkness.

"Those who love gravity sports freely seek new thrills and challenges. To ensure that they make it back in one piece they prefer high performance gear that offers the ultimate sense of freedom and protection," said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design of Volvo Car Group. "Volvo Concept XC Coupe is perfectly in tune with this active lifestyle. Its capability and protection is cleverly integrated into the sophisticated looks. The XC is ready and willing to bring you into the adventure zone and back."

"Several orange details and exterior graphics in combination with a bold use of matte rubber mouldings, which cover the rear end of the car, add to the highly functional expression in the design," Ingenlath said in regards to the car's looks.
